F1 » Hamilton admits: I hate driving for points

After settling for third place in Singapore, F1 World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton knows that consistency and restraint - rather than all guns blazing - are now the orders of the day in his title challenge, as the McLaren-Mercedes star enters the final three grands prix of the 2008 campaign with a seven-point advantage over Ferrari rival Felipe Massa.

too good what happened at monza when hk qualified 2nd and lewis qualified 15th hk should have passed vettel even though it was wet (he had his mclaren ecu remember). No heavy fuel load when lewis missed q3 heiki had the better fuel strategy.

For once we all seem to be in agreement (Shome Mishtake Shurely?)...............well, with 2Good and BarryW anyway...........Kovalainen WAS recruited as a numnber-two driver by McLaren.........and I am a trifle surprised that he has not done a little better, eg at Monza where he really SHOULD have got past Vettel................Uncle Ron must be hoping that Heikki can raise his game next season to be a more efferctive rear-gunner for Lewis.........

barry "what happened at monza" well the answer is simple really, vettel drove a better race, AND he did not have spray to contend with.

Wow... rich and 2Good... Well, wow... I can't beleive the blind hate that comes across from you two over and over again... Rich, could you explain just how the spray from Vettel was affecting HK when he was seconds behind? He had the clear track that Vettel had due to the disctance between the two of them.

Too Good - if MacLaren have the advantage in the wet due to their better understanding of the ECU can you explain how they don't understand it enough to keep tehir tyres in good condition in the dry like the Ferraris do? Or could that be that the Ferrari can look after the tyres better as the car is designed not to put so much work in them, which is bad for wet weather tyres?

s, your understanding of racing is a little lacking. vettel got pole by being fastest in quali. he was then able to drive away from kovi as he had nobody in front throwing up spray. kovi fell behind as the spray was unsighting him. the spray hangs in the slipstream for some distance. closing up to vettel worsened his vision. this is a well known fact and i would hav thought that anybody who was a follower of racing would know this. remember when schumi caught DC, he couldnt see him and ran into the back of him?? finally, i dont see any "hate" in my post. i am a fan of kovi and vettel

At monza Hamilton overtook 10 cars and I suspect that he had to cope with the same spray that was unsighting Kovi!
Come on!Lets be realistic!Kovi is consistenly 1 sec per lap slower than Lewis at race conditions wet or dry!I can't understand why but he is,although at quilifications he seems always competitive!I hope he can raise his game because he is a very likeable driver but he has to prove some things more!

savas, granted, but there was a far greater speed difference as he was passing backmarkers etc. ok, he took chances and it paid off. in relation to speed, i have not the figures, but another poster on a different thread, said that kovi had more faster laps when compared to lulu. this must mean something, but as one poster above said, the two drivers were normally on different strategies, with kovi running heavier. this must handicap him.

TooGood, if you are going to blame the ECU for Ferrari's failures this year, at least try to get some of your facts straight. The contract for the ECU went to open tender and McLaren won it because they (in the opinion of the FIA technical comittee) had the best package. All teams were given complete access to the hardware, software and firmware of the ECU long before the season started. It was up to them to get the best from the unit.

At the time the decision was made it was understood that McLaren would start with an advantage, as would whoever won the contract, but the comittee were satisfied that the architecture of the sytem was completely open.
