How come it is OK for any old muppet to have their say on this and other forums about the merits of a driver and yet when someone who has actually raced at the highest level says something in an interview or for a column they write, they are told they are not in a position to criticise? I would much rather read what Derek Warwick's views are than the great majority of the garbage we have to put up with on here!

F1 » Fuji F1 star Alonso 'not complete package'

Fernando Alonso's victory for Renault in the Japanese Grand Prix proved he is still one of the very best drivers in F1, argues Derek Warwick - but other aspects to the Spaniard's character will always count against him...

With the greatest of respect,I don''t think Derek Warwick is in a position to criticise Alonso.Let his own record speak for itself.A reasonable F1 driver and an average touring car driver if my memory is correct

Alonso is a superb driver but he does seem to have a bad attitude.
He did the dirty on Mclaren does not seem to be giving off good vibes about Renault (I know they are winning now) but we can all see what car he really wants to be in.
So D Warwick has a point.
But at the same time a bad attitude about things can get you a long way in F1

Agreed Tim. Can't understand so many posters say "you can't say that, who are you to say *insert whatever*".

If an ex-racing driver can't comment, who the hell can? All the armchair racer know-it-alls on this forum?! Maybe JYS says a lot, but he's still a 3 time world champ.

Alonso - Awesome driver, prima donna, wants a Ferrari badly. Still a great driver :D

Alonso is flawed genius in a motor racing car.

He has a spiteful streak in him that most drivers can conceal by being wise with their choice of words.

He is ruthless, and ruthless people WIN - but by being so, he's exposed all his tricks in the gard came, too soon.

Which team (other than Ferrari who have the FIA/Stewards on their side), would risk employing him?

He's a live wire, loose cannon.

In reply to FreQ.I wouldn't argue about what JYS says because he is definetly world class,my point was that Derek Warwick isn't and never will be a JYS.How can a man who never won the F1 championship criticise an F1 champion such as Alonso.I am not against criticism if the person has the credentials to do so.As far as JYS he has my utmost respect as do all F1 World champions

Yes FreQ if an ex-driver can't comment who the hell can? But we can criticize his thinking in particular when it comes to the "complete package" bit. As a Ferrari fan I would be devastated to see Alonso in Ferrari, but having said that Alonso if he keeps some grudge towards McLaren, he is 100% right to do so. After all he is a Spaniard hot blooded latin and one if you spit in his face will never adopt the British high ground in claiming rain. Now coming to his comment on Massa don't we all think he may have said "what do you think of course I would help Massa" and keeping quite for the remaining "after what happened last year what would you expect?" Now perhaps Mr. Warwick in his Britishness
