ferrari don't worry, just don't use KERS next season, and when another team beats you using KERS, the fia will ban the use of it. problem solved

F1 » Ferrari president: KERS in 2009 'a mistake'

The FIA is misguided in introducing KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems) to F1 in 2009, argues Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo - who describes the technology as too expensive and irrelevant to that used in road cars.

I will have nothing bad said about the introduction of KERS in F1.... because it''s keeping me very busy (and gamefully employed) at the moment designing KERS test equipment for various manufacturers!

I have a lot of respect for Ferrari having worked with them in the past but if they are behind in their development they only have themselves to blame because all the teams were notified of the new regulations at the same time.

Sounds like they may be struggling to get it working properly! May be fun next season.

Lex - Are you working on any of F1 projects? or road car projects ??
I agree, Ferrari have nobody else but themselves to blame. Even smaller team like Williams were first to invest in Company researching in KERS Solution. Its hard to imagine, team with Ferrari's resources were napping all the while.
McLaren tie-up with freescale is puzziling as well :? :?.If they plan to implement Freescale solution from 2010,are they planning to go Ohne KERS in 2009 :? :?

ferrari's biggest problem will be having to re-develop their whole car from a KERS design concept to a new f1 car as is all the teams and ferrari will not want to entertain the idea of this as it will knock everything out of balance in the design of the new car, for ferrari it is like taking a step backwards in design so they really already know how to get the best from the new regulations.

I think KERS is a bad idea.
F1 is about leading technology to improve performance. If KERS is not faster than non KERS is should be junked. I can not think of one innovation in F1 that has ever cost money to go slower.
Start a series that completes for efficiency and see how it attracted fans.

Ferrari is correct. For the past several years those two dinosaurs in charge have complained about cutting costs but all their solutions keep adding to costs.

Now we take KERS an expensive new proposition. This isn't just Ferrari complaining. Toyota have expressed concerns and are quoted as saying they probably can't have their system ready before midseason. BMW had suspended development when a mechanic was electrocuted when touching a KERS equipped car. Add the extra weight of KERS and this system maybe yet another failed expensive idea.

martin I agree that it may be best to wait before actually using the technology in a race. I suspect that there will be failures or even accidents caused by KERS. Look at how many refuelling fires we had this year. If there is a problem similar to the one BMW had it could be very dangerous. I am also concerned about the safety marshalls getting shocked during an extraction.

I am not even sure what the goal is with KERS. Is it to make the cars more efficient or faster? If it is to make them faster will it be like a push to pass or for the initial acceleration? If it takes heavy breaking to charge the system warm up laps and restarts will be more dangerous.
