F1 » Axe to fall on poorly-attended Chinese GP?

Having already ditched MotoGP, Shanghai may similarly be set to lose the Chinese Grand Prix as of 2010 - the result of excessive race fees, poor ticket sales and a lack of local interest in F1.

This just shows that not all new events are good for the sport at the expense of the older established tracks. Places like Silverstone are always full or near to full this was not the case.

It also shows that in the credit crunch climate Bernie may be charging to much for the privalige of hosting an event. Keen to begin with but tails off after a couple of years.

Lets hope the UK race stays on board.

Having just read on the F1 web site that in Germany they have given the Singapore track an award, apparently it beat Valencia - just.

Someone somewhere is watching different races to me. The 2 most boring races are up for awards while Shanghai a reasonable race circuit is getting screwed in money terms by unrealistic fees.

We have learnt recently that just less than 50% of F1 income finds its way back to the teams. All the tracks bar Monte Carlo have to pay exorbitant fees to stage the event.

Having the private equity fund CVC as owners of the sport seems to be bad for the future of the sport.

Good, get rid of it. And get rid of one of the middle east grands prix as well. They don't ******* need two of them when we here in N. America don't even get ONE.

I COMPLETELY agree with you Ian. CVC owning F1 may end up being what kills it.

this is what happens when you build a circuit in the middle of no-where. low crowds: i noticed how the stands on the corner leading onto the long straight were not used in this years F1.

personnally speaking from watching f1, motogp and a1gp there, i think its a rubbish track, i cant really think why, but the thing that makes it any decent is it seems to rain a lot :D

istanbul next? lots of empty grandstands there each year.

CVC/Delta3 are the latest owners but Ecclestone as the original seller and Mosley a benefactor of an alleged $300m are the winners.

What benefit has the Shanghai GP provided China to justify a $240m investment and actual losses whenever a GP is run is counted in the millions.
If the Asian tiger is feeling the pinch surely the pussycats of India and the rest are going to follow. But you have to applaud how BE gets what must be intelligent people to suspend belief in the first place and invest in what is the modern equivalent of pyramid selling!

ultimately the spectator keeps the sport alive, without them theres no revenue, I have never seen the sense of venues like China, keep the venues where the competitors and teams come from. It would be an ultimate farce if for example the GB GP lost its place in the calender, as it always well supported

When Schu won the championship Germany got a second GP. Now that Hami has won one and there appears to be room on the calender lets add a second race in Britain. And of course we need two or three races in North America. One of those could be a return to Mexico. While we are at it lets bring back Zandvort in Holland.

Good, another totally boring modern track. MotoGP has left and next will be F1. Three grandstands this year were turned into advetisement hoardings. You think how many people live in China and they aren't intestested so what's the point?
