F1 » Olympic medals to boost overtaking in F1?

Bernie Ecclestone's desire to see Olympic Games-style medals introduced into F1 in 2009 in an effort to produce more fighting, better racing and less 'driving for points' takes a step closer to fruition.

When I saw this story for the first time I was convinced it was a joke. Everybody wants it? Really?? Somewhere, the F1 stattos are going back and working out who won the WDC since 1950 under this system! :p Need more details to have a clear opinion but it sounds wrong....

If the positions from 4th down will still count towards championship position, how easy will it be to see quickly who had more 4th, 5th, 6th etc places than someone else?? Some kind of points system for 4th and....oh. DOH

Just when you thought things couldn't get more mickey mouse already, they outdo themselves... Sheesh, what a bunch of morons!

The only changes to the point system I would have contemplated is to add a point for pole and another for fastest lap during the race.

DUMB!

Medals so they fight for wins? The points system used to reward wins but was changed when Schumi dominated. Now after they screwed the points system up to reward consistency they want to go to medals. This is just stupid. Go back to 10, 6, 4 etc and you get the same thing without copying another sporting events medals.

Personally i think a points scoring system similar to MotoGP and world Superbikes would be better, as it would give greater points differances between positions, but would also give the drivers lower down the order something to push for. Hell why not have 2 short races like WSB, give additional points per positions gained, etc. There are so many more interesting ways to make the drivers fight harder for positions.

Maybe something that gives drivers points for overtaking even if they don't finish, therefore giving them insentive to push for more positions.

If there is 18 cars on the grid what will the other 15 cars be racing for?

Why do Bernie and Max keep messing about with F1. We have Max banging on about the ever increasing cost of competing, so changes from the V10 to the V8 engine and now wants to change again, plus the huge cost of introducing KERS. Now Bernie wants to do away with the points system for drivers.: It was not that long ago that we had 9 points for a win and 6 points for second, this was then changed to 10 points for a win to give more incentive to win. The points were then changed to the present system in order to stop one driver running away with the championship in the early part of the season. Please stop interfering, or is this a ploy to make it easier for the FIA to fix the results!

Dumb! The points each driver gets ultimately affect not just the championship but also the competition for F1 seats and salaries. Under Bernie's scheme a driver without a significant # of medals half way through the season may as well give up trying. Anyway, passing is in large part governed by physics. Get more of the aero's off the cars and allow for more slipstreaming, get the slicks back on so the cars can work in the corners and get rid of this engine parity nonsense - why not a mixed capacities (aka Superbike) maybe 2.8L/six, 2.4L/V8, diesels. I just want to see competion and innovation. PS, message to the media, F1 fans want to see more of the technical stuff with the cars.
