F1 » F1 chief Ecclestone: I'm not unreasonable

F1 commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone insists he is far from 'unreasonable', as Montreal politicians have called him - and argues he never wanted the Canadian Grand Prix to disappear from the calendar.

Ecclestone, being the president of Formula One Management surly is duty bound by the shareholders (in which he is a minority holder) to get the best deals available at the time - as would any other business.

I agree DM, but it's removing the racing from people who have been real fans for many years. Soon only the rich will be able to travel to watch it live. F1 will become even more of 'a place to be seen'.
The teams need to 'breakaway' from the FIA and form a proper racing series again.

The beast deals in which aspect? Surely there has to be more to it than short-term financial gain?

You could also think about having races in north america as strategically important for the sport as a whole, not least because it gives better exposure to sponsors and car manufacturers etc. Just as you could think about how good races on good racing tracks provide more entertaining races, which will help increase the fan base etc. There's much more to it than just short-term financial gain and who is willing to pay the highest fees to get the races. What's is I'm certain Bernie knows this, he just doesn't care.

I've no problem with BE being a hard nosed businessman - it was that that built F1 up to be a major global sport. I've no problem with him pushing for a top deal for his company.

My problem is that I can:t trust anything he says. Apart from his constant 180-degree opinion changes, he says things that simply can't be true. I don't believe in his much-vaunted queue of people wanting GPs. I don't believe it when he gives his version of other peoples opinions, either negotiation Canucks or teams faced with medals. He simply makes these things up, I'm sure.

So what worries me most is why someone who is supposed to be sharp as a tack doing that?

The other thing Sir Ecclestone has failed to notice is the worldwide recession hitting pretty much everybody.
What use several races in UAE or similar places when no one bothers to be at the circuit, no atmosphere does come accross even to armchair fans?
Unreasonable - how he constantly sniped @ Silverstone until eventually he got his way and it is no more from 2010 ... total ****.

So he offered them the contract from any other race? They should have grabbed Monaco's contract.

To quote Bernie: “Everyone in Formula 1 loves Montreal. I said [to organisers] you can come to my office, pull any contract out of that drawer for all the overseas races, take any one of them, cross out the name and put your name, and that's what we'll do."

The assumption from this quote must be that a contract with him is worthless. Would you sign up to $100+ contract with this man?

Time he got real or got out, or more accurately, put out.
