F1 » F1 chief Ecclestone: I'm not unreasonable

F1 commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone insists he is far from 'unreasonable', as Montreal politicians have called him - and argues he never wanted the Canadian Grand Prix to disappear from the calendar.

"Not unreasonable." Sorry. That's BS. Bernie will only be reasonable if the price is right.

Sad to see it go: it was the one race I looked forward to attending since it was a few hours away. F1 viewership in NA will certainly drop off in light of it's lack of a NA race. I've certainly decided to tune out for various reasons, lack of passing etc. and now this is pretty much the nail in the coffin.

The Canadian GP was always my favorite track. It seemed to make exciting racing. I am going to miss it.

"We've got a queue of people that want races, so we can't be unreasonable."

A queue of people? Like who Bernie? Cuba, Nigeria, Mongolia?

I think Canada should have a GP, but it's not unreasonable for Ecclestone to be able to demand whatever the hell he likes. It can be postulated that he's put forwards many positive revisions for the sport. He's always pushing the envelope as far as F1 is concerned and the sport has thrived under him for many, many years.

From what the Canadian press is reporting, he was offered $110 million over 5 years with the Canadian organizers taking a share of the profits. What he wanted, and refused to move on, was $175 million plus all revenues from corporate boxes and circuit advertising. I'm assuming that this in US dollars. As a Canadian I hate to see the race go but if the taxpayer is on the hook for a whole bunch of money, I can see why Montreal gave it up. The $100 million that the race generates is a revenue number, not a net figure. Long story short is that we would have to see a whole bunch more information to know if Bernie's deal would have been a good or bad one for Montreal
