F1 » Senna wants to make his own name in F1

GP2 Series Vice-Champion Bruno Senna is keen to make his F1 debut with Honda in 2009 following his promising test in Barcelona - but if he succeeds, he stresses he will be doing so as Bruno Senna, not Ayrton's nephew.

jan, ayrtons name was senna, but when he started racing, so as not to alert his parents who would not have approved, he changed his name to da silva. only when he had made his name in lower formulae, did he return to his real name ,senna. in brunos case, his name is lalli but purely to emphasise his lineage, he made a tactical change to senna. thus, thre is a big difference. as ellen has confimed, his two passports show his surname as lalli. all this does not take away from his inappropriate statement, that he wants to make it in his own name, when he clearly wishes to be "senna". a fast and successful does not guarantee success, but the name helps!

@rich ard There are a few points: Actually I made a mistake - his Italian passport states Bruno Senna and that was what I was going to write but I obviously got distracted by having to do three things at the same time. Sorry for arising even more confusion - my fault, should not try multitasking.
Second: The name change due to parents not approving the racing career was in the case of Piquet, not of Senna. Ayrton always used Senna da Silva at the beginning, and, as Jan stated, dropped the da Silva, as ist means "from the forest" and is so common in Brazil.
Third: When Bruno started his racing, they actually thought about which name to use, and they found out that at least in Brazil..

"The 2nd comming" Bruno will always be compared to Ayrton and he will have to live with that. Even Golden ******** over at Mclaren compares himself with Ayrton and correct me if i'm wrong but I think his helmet is yellow and the reason behind that is to do with his boyhood hero. Like his uncle he will (I hope) start in a struggling team and his talent will show through. He will be loathed in the UK by most of the so called F1 followers who can see no further than Hamilton. Also the UK press and a certain a web site will go out of there way to stir up the general public in to a anti Senna campain just as they did in the 80's because Ayrton took away a drive from a certain Mr Warwick.

...they got very negative reactions on using Lalli, it was seen as "hiding something which everybody knows anyway." So they went for Senna - obvioulsy you can´t do it right for everybody.
By the way: What he actually said in this interview on Monday in Barcelona was, that he is a different person from Ayrton, he is Bruno - and he wants to get the seat and all success on his own merit and performance - which he does, the car is not driven by the name, for sure. The actual question there was never much about the name, nuch more about heritage and comparison to Ayrton (I have it on tape.) You should not always believe what is made up in some stories - if one site copies from the other, worse

At the Age of around 21 i think the Senna name was the only option to begin a carreer. If he were turned out as crap today he would have been at home. But it wasn't the case. Live with it folks... :) He is learning fast and a great guy. He will do his own name. Anyway Ayrton's father is Milton da Silva...these Brasilian names are misteris :)
Whatever his name is, Bruno is a very true and respectable gus, from a family what los one of his sons. Given his story about death, banned from racing, Senna foundation, hitting dog, winning monaco, winning in the rain, poles, penalties, car failures....it's like a heroic greek drama about a man against odds and time. So, Go Bruno, Go for it !

@ 1960-1994, without a doubt if he starts at Honda he'll definitely be in a struggling team.
@ ellen, don't take it to heart... old rich ard is always ready with a negative.
all I will say is ...give the guy a break, if he's any good it won't matter that his name is Senna and anyway the list of drivers wanting to get into F1 is long and quite frankly I'd rather they used their name to get in rather than a f.uckload of money!!too many minted drivers can stay around just making up the numbers (BY SHOWING THEIR WALLETS) and denying real talent from having a crack

When Bruno first came to race in the UK in FBMW he raced under the name of Bruno Lalli, electing to drop the 2nd part of his surname so as to avoid the attention which would invariably be attracted, had he raced under the Senna name. Unfortunately word soon got out to the media & there was no longer any reason to race under his late fathers name, so he reverted to his given name, as is the way in Portuguese/Brasilian society, to his mothers maiden name. He is Bruno Senna Lalli. Did his family connection open doors, yes, does his family name help him drive the car to victories?... nope, he does that through his own capabilities

Firstly he never changed his name to senna, he wa born with the name Bruno Senna Lalli, he took the first part of his mums name and the first part of his dads surname.
In brazil it doesn't matter what order the name is in as long as it is consitent for all children. Ayrtons full name was Ayrton Senna da Silva, so brunos mum could have easliy chose da silva instead, but she chose senna. Its nice to see people who don't understand naming patterns outside the english speaking world having a go at him.
