In other words we did not want Mclaren or LH to win anything and we are now working on ways to stop them.

F1 » Bernie: Medals to make drivers 'try harder'

F1 commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone argues the introduction of a dramatically different, Olympic-style gold medals system into the sport in 2009 will make drivers try harder to overtake and improve the spectacle.

Wow, that''s real clever. There are so few overtaking manouvres simply because the drivers don''t want to win. Go Bernie!

Motivation isn''t everything and I think the new regs should help a bit. But still, it will be difficult, that''s what makes it special. If overtaking is the only type of racing that you find entertaining then perhaps F1 is not for you. There''s plenty of overtaking in WSBK but I still rather watch both F1 and MotoGP.

...and also, if motivation was everything then I''m sure Bernie would be long gone given the sheer number of people who really want to see his greedy 4r53 go.

"Bernie: Medals to make drivers 'try harder' - 4 big teams (McLaren, Ferrari, Renault & BMW) 8 cars. 3 medals. Outside of those 4 who's going to give a toss about where they finish they'll never get into the top 3 places unless 5 of the previously mentioned cars don't finish. Perhaps this is another money saving exercise. Teams with no chance to get any rewards will pull in after 1 lap and save fuel and their engines for the next lap they do at the next race. Cars try to overtake to get into the points, the battles for 8th place have always been close and intense, now it'll be an intense race only for the top 3 places. Just make the points gaps bigger eg. 18, 14, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Bernie Of all the stupid ideas you have come up with in the past this one takes the biscuit
Or is it your intention to finally alienate the few die hard F1 fans who have been watching the sport for years despite interference by yourself & the FIA
All of which have been allegedly to improve the spectacle, but has usually turned it in to a bigger farce
If this happens it is the final nail in the coffin of a once great sport that has been reduced to a cash generator for you & your companies

Take a look at the rules from the 1980's when it was a great sport then you might actually come up with something the fans want

Personally I think it is just another way to totally ruin the sport. Like it has been said above only the top 4 or 5 teams will get any sniff of these medals and so what if LH won even though he ended 5th in the last race. It's all down to the supposedly fair points system they introduced a few years ago.

Stop penalising drivers for overtaking manoevers like the one in Spa and the sport will be alot better. Let the drivers race the way they want to and don't stiffle them with stupid ruleings and watch how many exciting over taking shots the drivers will take.

Or if a team or driver make a mistake in a pitstop and they end up out of the points at the end of the race award them the retrospective points from the position they were in.
And if you skip a chicane in anything other than a red coloured car the driver at fault is thrown out of f1 for a 5 year period.
Same rule applies if you knock another innocent driver out (bordais) for example
Or if the FIA do not like anyone in general just get shot of them.
Problem solved.........

One has to wonder why Force India, Honda, Toyota, Red Bull etc. would even bother to enter. There is no way their drivers can end up high in the championship. A sensible F1 (there I go again, using sensible and F1 in the same sentence) would use a system that allows the lower half of the field to punch above their weight by consistently finishing well. Unfortunately, in F1, the lunatics are running the asylum.

if he really does want to do something to improve overtaking....keep the current points system and then just give away a couple of points to the driver who overtakes most in a race...each and EVERY driver would be in for a shout of getting something then...sod this daft medal thing he has come up with...

I'd say its pretty conclusive the only person who likes this idea is Bernie, even Eddie Jordan has said: "I think they (Ecclestone's proposals) are nonsense." LISTEN BERNIE!
As has been sed previously, only Ferrari, McLaren, BMW and Renault will have a chance of getting a medal, the rest might aswell sod off! :-o
There is no way u can say people like Hamilton, Raikkanon, Massa, Alonso, etc can possibly overtake any more than they do, if they see a space they go for it, irrelevant if its for a 10 points or a gold medal! :) :D
Im just hoping for the sport's sake it doesnt happen! :D

say kimi won the first 10 races and had 10 golds, and lulu came second every time and then went on to win the remaining 8 races with kimi retiring, or not even bothering to race, then kimi would be champion. so really, it is possible that just over half way through the season, kimi could withdraw and lulu need not race, knowing he could not now win. how ludicrous is that. and as for the others, they neednt turn up at all!! MAD!
