In other words we did not want Mclaren or LH to win anything and we are now working on ways to stop them.

F1 » Bernie: Medals to make drivers 'try harder'

F1 commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone argues the introduction of a dramatically different, Olympic-style gold medals system into the sport in 2009 will make drivers try harder to overtake and improve the spectacle.

Sounds good in theory BUT! if a driver finds himself outside the top 3 & no chance to get there 7 with no points to come, whats to stop him retiring from the race to save his engine for the next 1. With engines etc now to last 3 races (?) this could make sense.
If 1, 2 & 3 are so far ahead then we could arguably see the rest of the field "retiring?"
I am sorry Bernie but you are NOT really in touch with everyday fans & enthusiasts.
You have done a lot of good to bring the sport to where it is, I think it is now time to retire. (from a fellow 70+ fan)

I read somewhere that points/money would still be earned by the top 8-teams in the constructors' championship.

Drivers are racers. Other than rare, tight, title deciding situations like Lewis found himself in at Brazil this year, they all try their utmost to overtake whenever they can. Overtaking is rare due to complicated aerodynamics, not the drivers unwillingness. The new aero rules have an infinitely better chance of increasing overtaking than this ill-conceived medal system ever will.

I'm disappointed for the fans of the other drivers, who no longer get to cheer their drivers on for the points allocated to positions 4-8. Instead they've got to keep count of some lame combined finishing position system.

Bernie is a self-righteous dictator, and I hope this backfires in his face.

I think all cars that weren't Ferraris shouldn't be able to win the championship. Isn't that what you want to do Bernie?

We know that if the car is good (Ferrari, McLaren, Renault?, Williams?) most likely the WDCs will come from one of the good cars. I don't see what is the problem. Points will be given the same way to determine the WCC and who gets what monies. All the other drivers occupying other cars may have a chance to win (Vettel driving in the rain). Overtaking will not increase but strategists will have some good time devising strategies on how best their drivers and cars will get to the podiums. One thing is certain we won't have a driver who needs only 2 or 3 points to get the WDC relax in the last GP and take it easy if his medal count is inferior to the guys ahead of him.

Don't you guys get it. This just makes it easier for the FIA to decide who will be WDC. They don't have to worry about points, adding them up and looking at scenarios(too complicated for them anyway), just count the number of gold medals. If LH is ahead, just find a reason to give him a 25 second penalty. Remember, they're all codgers anyway, math must be getting harder for them.

What's the point of the silver and bronze "medals" if only wins count towards the championship?

Why do they always meddle with the rules, why not just keep it the same? This year was great. No-one was settling for second until the end of the year - look at Spa! The reason the likes of Kubica, Heidfeld, Alonso, Kovalainen etc. fail to win more races is not that they're not trying to overtake... they're just too far behind.

This is a terrible idea.

Way can't that little dwarf just piss off out of F1 and motorsport for good and that will make drivers overtake because they can get down to racing rather then keep having to adapt to rule changes every race just to keep tht little dwarf happy
