F1 » Public transport only to Donington GP

In a surprise announcement by Simon Gillett, the British Grand Prix at Donington Park - due to be held from 2010 - will be F1's first-ever public transport-only affair, with spectators banned from taking their cars to the circuit.

well i suppose that this is an attempt to relieve themselves of providing infrastructure, but how is the public and private transport system going to organise enough buses etc to service the number of people attending? chaos!

This guy will get on well with Bernie, they''ve obviously from the same planet!
The only reason they''re doing this is to pre-empt the local objections they are getting and are bound to get, from the circuit locality, in particular the airport.
The train station mentioned is not yet built and lies on the opposite side of the M1, about 1.5 miles from the circuit, requiring transfer via shuttle bus. The average punter may put up with this but does he really imagine that the supposed 11000 odd hospitality users will tolerate it? There''ll be issues with helicopters as well given the close proximity of the airport and the hostility that already exists. I suspect this GP ain''t going to happen!

Jack - could it be that the previous posts represent the UK national attitude to change?? As an optimist I suspect you would find yourself on the outer: a lot.

No I don't think the posts represent a natural attitude to change but a realistic assessment of a crazy idea. Can you honestly imagine around 90k being catered for by public transport alone?

This is a planning permission move, as the assumption of all visitors coming by coach etc will be built into the Environmental Impact Assessment (which will have a traffic element). However, it won't necessarily form part of the planning permission as it would be difficult to build into a condition or a Section 106 agreement. So assuming Donny gets its permission (and thats still a big if) expect to see some rowing back on this pretty quickly, first to a 'limited number of private cars' (after all, can you see celebs and VIPs who don't come by helicopter coming on a National Express Coach?) and eventually a much more common mix of coaches, cars bikes etc.
