And the cherry on-top to this stupid, ridiculous, embarrassing (for Crash) top-10.

Vettel is great, but anyone who thinks he''s *the* best is nuts. Maybe in a year or two, but in 2008?

This sums up what most have already realised - that this list is worthless. It''s just an amalgamation of not only people''s opinions, but their biases.

Dear Crash: you would have got a more meaningful top-10 if you simply asked for readers to nominate their favourite driver, rather than rate them all. With Hamilton haters marking him down, Massa haters doing the same, etc. you''ve ended up with an inoffensive no.1 that doesn''t actually reflect who most people think is the best driver.

Vettel drove excellently this year for the most part - he had a woeful start but obviously was one of the strongest outright by the year's end.

I guess the main point to be drawn from the poll is that it's a fair bit easier to use hypotheticals when you're attempting to rate the driver exclusive of what car they're in - hence the slightly bizarre results. It's then a question of if/when the driver in question moves up to a top team where they don't have 'inferior car' as a factor, whether they can actually do what people hope/imagine at this stage. [if you see what I mean - that's probably not too well explained :) ]

This poll is twisted.

Ferrari and Renault Supporters voted Hamilton down.
McLaren Supporters voted Massa and Kimi down.

Meaning Vettel who would have been 4/5thth is promoted.

Hamilton, Alonso, Kimi are the only world champions in F1 - and by logic are the best drivers. Of this list, Hamilton gathered the most points in 2008.

Alonso is far better than Vettel also.

Hamilton misses WDC by 1 point in first year.
Vettel gets 1 (lucky) race win in first year.

Somehow Vettel is 'the best'?

Dear ohh dear.......

I voted for Vettel. Why ? Because considering the package he had, his age and his experience he had the best overall performance for the year 2008.
Other people scored higher than him in the WDC, but they had either more experience or better car or both.
And lets not forget this is a vote for 2008 performance. Not for the best competing F1 driver to date.

stephen, how was vettels win "lucky"? He qualified in pole and led throughout the race. other so-called "faster" drivers could not catch him. how was that "luck"?

Guys calm down!. Its just a silly poll based on a daft question, so some folk let the heart rule their head on these things, so what, as long as you can right within yourself you made the intelligent call and not the influenced one. Personally, I am only concerned about crash.net calling him the next "Michael Schumacher in certain quarters", just because he german, doesn't mean he has the same pig headed attitude, not all Scotsmen wear kilts and not all Englishmen do Morris dancing, mind you both aren't blessed with good looks

This was yet another shameless excercise by crash to generate more hits to please their advertisers, all harmless but as the season draws to a close they are left with little alternative as new stories arrive less frequently.I see they have now started a Best Touring Car driver poll.By February we will probably be on the Best Ginetta driver or Best Burger stand at the British GP! :D

Vettel IS the best driver of 2008. He was on pole at Monza and led the race convincingly in the wet, in a car that's not up to par with the front runners. He didn't luck into the win, or won it from the pits like Kubica in Montreal! In the pre-Hamilton days people would swoon over Seb and hailing him as the new Ayrton Senna...but with Hamilton on the grid, he's overlooked.

Vettels drive at Monza was outstanding but he was fortunate in the circumstances of the two days, practice and race day.If he was so good why was he not able to do it in the following races? Because the circumstances at Monza were not found again. He will almost certainly win more races in the future, but the title of Best Driver for 2008? Not a chance!

Then who should be Best Driver? Hamilton? Why? Cause he won the Championship? In a car that should have won a championship! Hardly a strong reason to be crowned the Best Driver of 2008. Put Vettel in the McLaren and he'd win a championship too.
