And the cherry on-top to this stupid, ridiculous, embarrassing (for Crash) top-10.

Vettel is great, but anyone who thinks he''s *the* best is nuts. Maybe in a year or two, but in 2008?

This sums up what most have already realised - that this list is worthless. It''s just an amalgamation of not only people''s opinions, but their biases.

Dear Crash: you would have got a more meaningful top-10 if you simply asked for readers to nominate their favourite driver, rather than rate them all. With Hamilton haters marking him down, Massa haters doing the same, etc. you''ve ended up with an inoffensive no.1 that doesn''t actually reflect who most people think is the best driver.

I gather that some devotees can't cope with the result when they don't like it. Vettel wasn't my choice for the #1 driver, but I can cope with it better than some of the followers of lulu or Ferdi. Heck, I would say if it were lulu or Ferdi I'd be fine with that too because everybody is entitled to have their own opinion and that's what the poll is.

I think that people is blinded for just one good year with a couple of good races by a man that has no pressure at all. Of course Vettel looks like he is going to be a very good driver. But today, he is not the best. To me:
1/ Alonso (he did get the best from his car, none thought he was going to be able to end the year as he did: proved again he is a complete driver)
2/ Massa - Hamilton (Massa had bad luck, but also a couple of bad races: Hamilton have some bad performances, but he still clinched the crown)
4/ Kubica (He did very well when he could, but nothing really great)
5/ Vettel (He shined a couple of times, but still he did several mistakes).
6/ Raikkonen (Great but unmotivated)

rich ard,

Vettel got lucky at Monza for two reasons: 1. A rolling start meant he wasn't open to get jumped by Kova or Webber, and 2. he didn't have to deal with the spray in the early laps that every other driver did, allowing him to build a lead.

Nevertheless, it was a good drive and I was pleased to see him win what was a strange race. I think his dice with Webber next year will be awesome to watch. Webber's on a hiding to nothing win or lose though - win, and it's because he's got more experience than Vettel and thus *should* have won, but lose and he's yesterday's man. I feel for the poor guy.

granted, turbo, but it wasnt luck that put him on pole, was it? also, from memory, he had spray from other cars after his pit stop.

It wasn't luck that put him on pole, no. But it DID have a lot to do with Ascanelli's call to run a light fuel load on his car.

Vettel's good in the wet but no better than other noted rain specialists, like Alonso and Webber.

Congratulations to Sebastian on a fantastic season (from Monaco onwards) He's just as deserving of the driver of the year title as any other driver.
I think the only bit of luck involved with the Monza win were the fact that the conditions evened up the field somewhat but still, he did a great job beating Heikki on a similar strategy and you can't say the spray did it for him as after 3 laps he was so far ahead, Heikki and co had no spray!
Obviously he still has a long way to go and I think there are better drivers in F1 and next season he'll be under pressure to perform as he's been doing recently and the 'new Schumi' tag which is putting too much pressre on him. I wish him all the best.

All eyes were on Coulthard, Button, Rosberg Kubica etc when they came into F1. Vettel is far from being the best driver in F1. He had a lucky break - By far the best car set up on one race - That does not make him the best driver 2008 - I want to see how he compares with Webber before I make a decision about him. Vettels car might have been a lot better then we all thought 2008. we all live to see a new champion emerge but we should not get too excited about them.

I really rate Vettel. He's a superstar in my book but I do think the poll was a little screwy. Being an Aussie, my boy of couse is still Webber... Been loyal since he did so well at the Brit FFord Festival in 96! Considering Webber's continuing failure to get on anyone's radar I'm so looking foward to 09. History has shown that he rates well when compared to his team mates, and it will be very interesting for us, and himself to some extent to line up against one of the hottest drivers in F1. Bring it on! :p

Good, yes. The best, probably not. Too many emotions skewing the voting.

Any other result than Lewis Hamilton winning the leading drivers poll is a travesty and ridiculous. The only conclusion I can come to is that Crash contributors are racist. What other logical reason can there be for not placing Lewis as No1.
