"an str source" said that button wouldnt need an "audition". i wonder who was this, maybe a mechanic , but i doubt it would be anyone in authority. anyway, i seem to remember button saying, during the year, that "honda had to improve" hinting that he might not stay there. obviously 8m a year for three years convinced him to stay. and he is going to walk away with 15m to do nothing!!. he should retire and enjoy his windfall. does anybody else think that his 8m per year to run at the back, was a bit over the top i am sure that there are many drivers ahead of him that are driving for a fraction of that amount.

F1 » Button 'wouldn't need' Toro Rosso audition

Jenson Button's hopes of remaining in F1 in 2009 following Honda's shock withdrawal from the sport have been boosted, after Scuderia Toro Rosso suggested he would 'not need an audition' if he wished to join them next year.

There is justice for you. Someone runs at the back all year and is out-performed by their team-mate. His team-mate gets given the boot and Button gets a Torro Rosso drive for 2009! A total joke!

Rubens should be the one who is being given a ride by Torro Rosso and not useless Jenson. He has been given enough chances and he has never delivered.

Gaz - "never delivered"

Have you not been watching F1 for very long, just this year perhaps? Forgotten already have you? Who's the only person to have won a race in an modern era Honda? I'll give you a clue. His initials are JB.

As for this year you can't deliver much in a car that can't give anything. The only reason Rubens outscored Jenson was the fluky wet Silverstone race.

I think Bourdais has more to offer STR next year than Button, he was really impressive at the end of '08, and I think with the new regulations next year and the return of slick tyres will make Bourdais a consistent points scorer next year. Buttons past his prime, he was at his best in the 2004 season when he was best of the rest behind the Ferrari's. Barrichello deserves a drive next year more than Button does.

It might of been a fluke from Rubens.... but you can't seriously think that the only person to have won in the modern era for Honda wasn't a fluke was it??

A £15 million payout to a multi-millionaire.

Ignoring the rights and wrongs of how much he deserves it wouldnt it be quite something if he divided it amongst the 800 people who are probably are about to join the dole queues?
I am sure the average team worker needs £19000 more than Jenson needs £15mill.

Absolutely, Hungary was a fluke, and Rubens out-qualified Button this year 10-8, and anyway, as for Silverstone, Button would've been up there on the podium as well if he hadn't spun off! Button was awful this year, he's past it!

DBL, as has been said..........JB has never delivered. Wet race fluke at Hungary. Never been close to a dry podium never mind a win!

I'm not sure Ross Brawn's comment is in good taste - 'it's not ok for a driver to miss a year, but engineers don't mind. I'll go fishing'.

Well that's ok for you Ross as you're a multimillionaire, but I'm pretty sure a junior engineer might be pretty annoyed.
