Didn't Ferrari say that if these engines came in, they'd be off? I'd think that BMW Mercedes and Toyota would also be looking at their future involvement, if the only advantage to competing was to say that their engine was more reliable than anybody else's standard engine.

Thin end of the wedge? Yet again, MM pushes through what he want to do, ignoring what the teams have to say.

Renault - one of F1's major players - has spoken out to deny reports it has gone against its fellow manufacturers in the sport in acquiescing to the FIA's desire to introduce a standardised Cosworth engine from 2010.

Hmmm, if it does go this way, surely all of the teams will want to have go for the supply, thus keeping their team name in F1 as the only engine supplier.... but hasnt Ferrari just signed a deal a few months back to supply engines for A1GP? Perhaps this was just a warm up to when the FIA hand them the contract for F1... :rolleyes:

The deal was done with Cosworth on the 5th December 2008. At the same time the deal for a single transmission, the XR (Xtrac/Ricardo) was brought forward for all teams whatever enging option they choose.

On the engines the teams can move forward with their exsisting engines completly unaltered until 2011 or up to make or buy the Cosworth spec. For any option the XR gearbox has to be used.

It would seem to me that a standard engines takes away the engineering side of the competition by too much. However I do feel that the car is now a too larger fraction in the "competitive" formula, I would like to see the driver have more influence on the result.

But returning to engines, why the FIA don't ban this thing called "pump fuel" which more accurately should be called a chemical?

Wouldn't it be much easier for the FIA to arrange the distribution of regular 95 octane real pump petrol (note, not chemical)to all the teams, I am guessing that this might restrict revs and therefore power, we would still have different and interesting engines?

I could go on.............

Agree with Mr Cynical re the fuel, good sugestion, makes engineering developments more relevant to the real world as well.

Just wanted to say I don't like FOTAs suggestion of reducing the length of GPs. I think the current length is just about right and I think there is an arguement for having one endurance event a year which is 50% longer and carries twice the points. 2 Shorter races could be an option though. A heats and final type scenario was always more exciting to watch in lower forms of motor sport as it brings race craft more to the forefront.

a poster on another thread suggested production based blocks. this is actually not too far fetched. in the past, there have been various homologation rules, so maybe the engines should be based on a homologated engine with a min number of say 5000 engines being built before receiving homologation. ok, some companies in the past have found ways around these rules, but only when figures like 50 were enough for homologation.fia said that they neded FIVE teams to sign up for the cosworth. if bmw, ferrari, merc, toyota and renault refuse, there are not five teams left to sign up. so it may be a dodo.
