Nice that these guys got to take a trip to Monaco for their meeting. I reckon that they could have bought a few seasons worth of wheel nuts for the cost of all their private planes, lodging, meals, and entertainment. I guess having a video conference would be to high tech for F1.

F1 » Mosley: F1 problems are 'the FIA's fault'

Max Mosley has admitted that many of the current economic problems plaguing F1 - the like of which led to Honda's shock withdrawal last week - are the fault of the sport's regulations, imposed by the FIA...

What an admission! Things must be really bad if this is a direct quote. It sounds like panic stations in the FIA because they are revealing all the things we suspected about F1 teams expense but did''nt know for sure. Botton line F1 is nearly broke. Friday''s FIA statement about this "agreement" is going to be interesting.

So basically, he's admittng the rules are far to tight and thus stopping innovation and teams doing whacky things which make the sport interesting. Yet won't change the tightness of the rules since it may make the sport less safe.

Come on Max, we want to see machine guns strapped to the sides of F1 cars (thats a joke btw), and also six and eight wheel loonies machines with flappy moving wings! Brings in each cars unique design, innovation, and more novelty and entertainment for the us fans.

The big thing in the 60s-70s was the innovation and open rules. Thats why it was so open. Open rules are whats needed now, not the ultra tight silliness we have.

This is good news- if he's actually owning up to his own stupidity, maybe he'll step down.

When are they ever going to wake up, have a car of certain sized dimentions, i.e it must fit into a certain sized box. hieght, width, length. Fix an engine size and configuration (preferably turbo) and everything else is free.
F1 should remain as the leading technological platform of automotive engineering that is what it's all about. Isn't it?

Like him or loath him, Mosley isn't stupid and I think he's hit the nail on the head with his assertion.

OK, maybe he's been partly to blame along with many others but surely better to admit to a mistake and try to do something about it than pig-headedly plough on maintaining that everything's grand.

Racefan's right - it's about time we put aside MM's personal idiosyncracies and accept the fact that he is an astute guy in a big job, AND he's big enough to admit in his own way that he's been at the helm while things have got a bit silly ££-wise - and again, I didn't notice anyone else moaning about cost last year either. Like them or loath them, MM (and BE) may have created a monster, but at least it IS a monster, not the 'gentlemen's club' it used to be. MM is SPOT-ON about more innovation and less refinement too. Engineering single-use wheels at £800,000 a year is the F1 equivalent of Nero fiddling while Rome burned

At least he's big enough to admit his mistake. But I think that by allowing free-for-all innovation in F1 today will INCREASE the cost. Imagine all the time in the windtunnel, all the millions in research. Will that reduce the cost? They should find a way so that innovation should not be stifled but at the same time the cost should not spiral beyond control. Some might say that in the 70s and 80s they managed to do it, but consider this :- I read in F1 Racing that the when designing the FW07 ground effect car the Williams team used the windtunnel at Imperial College for a week. A far cry from the 24-hour operation of todays team, doesn't it?

m bee, i was just thinking along the same lines. all the teams have windtunnels because up till now, aero has been vital. with new aero rules, maybe there should be just one or two tunnels, under strict control and with a specific total of hours allowed in the tunnel. use during the season could be restricted to emergency use only. further, as in indy car, only four (??) should be allowed to work on the car during a pit stop. 700 people to design and run 2 cars for a season is ridiculous.

Yeah, Max gets it...really!

"FIA President Mosley, however – who has embarked upon a series of drastic cost-cutting measures in an effort to prevent more teams from following Honda's example in walking away from F1 due to its out-of-control expenditure – has revealed that KERS would be 'the last thing' to be got rid of"
