Oh, yeah, the awful cars & drivers from the 1990s.

Let''s see (IIRC): Cars-Lancia Delta Integrale (3 titles), Toyota Celica GT-Four (2 titles), Subaru Impreza (3 titles), Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (1 title), Toyota Corolla (1 title): Drivers- Carlos Sainz (2 titles), Juha Kankkunen (2 titles) Didier Auriol (1 title), Colin McRae (1 title), Tommi Mäkinen (4 titles).

Yep, utter and complete crap cars & wastrel drivers. No one would ever buy a video game with any of those lousy cars and drivers. No one would ever watch old race films or dream of driving those cars or being those drivers. :?

Got to agree there, they make far far too much.

The top drivers make more money in their career than they could ever spend. Its ridiculous.

I think Minardi has a good point here. Maybe we're simply reaching the end of the manufacturers' era in motorsports? The tendency right now is that the series that are more focused on teams than on manufacturers generally are more interesting anyway. There are only so many manufacturers, but you could have any number of teams. Compare MotoGP and WSBK or WTCC and NASCAR for instance. I guess in a sense the manufacturers did more or less self destruct, because they are pretty much responsible for pushing each other to spending ridiculous amounts of cash on R&D in F1 - And now some of them, like Honda, can't take it anymore, so they go and leave a big mess behind. Who's going to fix it - MAX?

Dark times ahead for F1 it seems - but luckily there are other exciting series. I'm hopeful something good will come out of this though, cos F1 hasn't really been all that good the last few years.

Agreed chris, rallying in the 90's was pretty good. It was when they tried to make it TV friendly that it all went a bit downhill. All these micky mouse stages run multiple time to compress the rally down into a small geographical area has killed the sport IMO.

Got to agree with So desu as well. There is nothing wrong with having more teams like Williams and less manufactures, in fact it's a very good thing IMO. Who wants to support a faceless corporate like BMW or Renault? They have no passion. They will pull out as soon as they stop seeing a benefit to the company. Where as someone like Williams, F1 is their business, they have real passion and will stay until the bitter end.

"I'm hopeful something good will come out of this though, cos F1 hasn't really been all that good the last few years. "

So true. I've said for a long time that probably for the best thing for F1 is for it to die in its current format and will hopefully be forced to rethink itself from the ground up for the better.

For the last 10 years F1 has been going steadily downhill. In fact I would pinpoint it to when the made the stupid decision of running treaded tyres and narrow track cars.
