F1 » Drivers to face pay cuts in new era F1?

With aerodynamic development, engines and testing all already facing the squeeze, could driver salaries be the next area to feel the pinch as F1 prepares to drastically cut its costs over the next few years..?

surely, if drivers were given a set wage, depending on previous seasons results, and then rewarded with bonuses per point gained, with a special bonus for a win, this would give drivers more of an incentive to do the best possible. better idea than medals, methinks.

Not a bad idea rich ard. It will be good plus it would give drivers more motivation to try harder. :)

Rich ard, good idea. I had it a few weeks ago, when BE came up with his stupid medal idea.

Sory to burst your bubble, but i belive ALL the drivers are on a points bonus, an a final standings bonus. Therefore said system is already in place.

Having said that i cant say what the basic pay is, although there is no way anyone is worth more than 7-8 mil a year as an f1 driver. Which i would say is what fernando, lewis, kimi and maybe massa should be earning.

Bonus pay system?

Can you imagine the team india boss bricking it watching his driver about to win a race by fluke!?

Some of the "less gifted" drivers still have to buy their seats don't they??

SS, BE's medal idea was to promote racing and overtaking to gain position. Bonus's dependent upon position would do much more for that, IMHO, than any medal system, where as has been commented, only 3 people would benefit.

non-factory outfit drivers have to buy their seat, yes, hence why Bourdais is wondering what the outcome is - despite being a 4 time champ, he seems to be struggling to find the money that Buemi and Senna could bring.

As well as Factory drivers being paid a salaray.... don't forget they also get a mass of income from sponsorship too.

Isn't Massa one of the lowest paid drivers on the grid?
