Really? I wonder why he failed to do so in 2007 with the same car and intense scrutiny to ensure fairness of equipment and was beaten by a ROOKIE, the very same Lewis Hamilton. I must say, F1 "commentators" do come out with a pile of rubbish on a frequent basis!

F1 » Alonso 'could beat Hamilton easily'

Double F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso and Ferrari would make 'an exceptional duo' capable of defeating Lewis Hamilton 'easily', it is contended by three of the sport's experts.

Now to sit back and wait for the usual outraged responses.

Both are great drivers anyway - F1''s richer for having both of them.

Alonso showed his true talent this season. Once he had an engine to match his skill as a driver I think he had a fantastic run of points. He seems to be a full package.

He also has character, rather than the media machine that drives for McLaren.

I really hope he (and others) can compete with LH next year. I would hate the predictability we used to have when Schumacher just won pretty much everything

I absolutely agree, Alonso is a far more talented and intelligent driver than Hamilton, whilst Hamilton may be quick in qualifying, his racecraft is less than polished.

Alonso proved several times last year that with adecent package he could have won the championship in 07 and 08, as for his 2007 performance or lack of it, surely that was down to the infighting within McLaren that destabilised him and Ron Dennis' support for Hamilton over Alonso.

Nonsense, Alonso had his chance in 07 in the same car and failed. He is no doubt one of the best but Hamilton will just get stronger whilst Alonso with throw more toys out of his pram getting frustrated stuck in the Renault. Massa will offer a real challenge without stamping his feet when things dont go his way.

Hamilton: 2 years in F1: 1 WDC + 1 near miss
Alonso: 8 years in F1 2 WDC + 1 near miss

Hamilton is the same speed as Alonso but obviously less experienced and more error prone.

By Logic, Hami cannot be as good - yet.

However to say Alonso is 'easily' better is a retarded comment.

if my memory serves me right alonso's 07 year was a disater due to the mind games and the spygate ruling where alonso seemed to be the wiping boy for all mclaren's woe's shamilton his r.d's prefferd driver having spent millions on him. but without the distraction's and with like for like machinery alonso would win far more races f1 needs alonso in a competive car to liven things up what shamilton hopes is that he dosent get one.

He has to get to Ferrari to do it, what they overlook is the fact Hamilton BEAT Alonso in equal machinery in his rookie year. There is nothing else to be said.

These comments come from three ex-Minardi people who gave Alonso his break - of course they will be bigging up their former driver over anyone else!

All this will do is raise the argument about Alonso/Hamilton in 07 and whether or not mind games prevented Alonso from winning etc etc. At the end of the day, no-one really knows. Alonso could have been psychologically troubled, but then Hamilton was still in his first year so neither were probably at the top of their ultimate game.

Lets just hope circumstances prevail to ensure we have a few years of exciting, competitive and close F1 racing ahead - lord knows we could use some!!
