Really? I wonder why he failed to do so in 2007 with the same car and intense scrutiny to ensure fairness of equipment and was beaten by a ROOKIE, the very same Lewis Hamilton. I must say, F1 "commentators" do come out with a pile of rubbish on a frequent basis!

F1 » Alonso 'could beat Hamilton easily'

Double F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso and Ferrari would make 'an exceptional duo' capable of defeating Lewis Hamilton 'easily', it is contended by three of the sport's experts.

A double WC in same equipment been beaten by a rookie on a track where the rookie has never driven on before. That sums up LH. No matter what car they had no rookie should have done that. LH should not have done better than HK did last year. HK is a good bench mark for a rookie and LH blew that apart. I dont expect many poepl on this forum to agree because they should get a World Champioship for their ignorance. If FA goes to Ferrari the other driver will need to be Barichello because he is the true number 2. FA is not moaning at the moment because Piquet is rubbish. he should be a one man team. I have not said that FA is not a good driver he is but not as good as some people make out.

Er some of those F1"experts" have really short memories. Lewis' first 2 poles and race wins namely in Canada and the US were on tracks that Lewis HAD NEVER EVER RACED ON BEFORE IN ANY KIND OF CATEGORY. Then at Japan, in torrential rain, Lewis outqualified Alonso with more fuel on board, and got outpaced in the race so much so, that Alonso crashed trying to keep him. Yeah that's how EASY it was for him to beat Lewis in the same car.....

He could not do it @ Mclaren, but with all of the FIA (Ferrari Internal Assistants) changing rules and making biased decisions I guess he may be able to a Ferrari, without that assistance, he would not stand a chance.

When I read all those comments by you guys, I already predict that Hamilton lovers will use those 2007 fiasco as the main point. But in truth, I really felt that we should pull Hekki Kovalainen and ask him the same question for a clear picture on who's the better driver. He used to work with both of them and he is in better position to give comments. Agree?

At last, the great drivers will always rise, end of story, alonso is so naturally talented its scary, hamilton on the other hand.........no, i dont think so anyway.
Id love to see the renault competitive this year, no doubt fernando will wipe the floor with spoilt big headed boy. hamilton best driver in the world? Only to the british as usual, irishman here, i can see it with unbiased eyes and its alonso and raikkonen still the top 2 drivers in the world, kubica and vettel next up.

ZEROKUN makes a good point that HK could judge, but I've got a different angle. LH and FA STARTED 2007 on a level playing field, ENDED 2007 on identical points but for some reason, and using his own free will, FA STARTED 2008 driving for an also-ran team whereas LH was driving for the (joint) best team. That has GOT to show ill-judgement on FA's part, and all this 'if he was in a ferrari' stuff is irrelevant, he managed to wangle himself out of a good team into a bad one! In football parlance 'an own goal'.... And there's a lot of heresay about his relationship with McLaren, but he was architect of his own downfall there too, what about that crass act in holding LH up in the pits?

If Alonso is given the support he needs at Ferrari he would be unbeatable there. You see this happen to drivers occassionaly, where they dont get the support they need at a top team, move to a lesser team where they get more support, and as a result become more competitive. Alonso has always had support at Renault, and has flourishered there, yet when he moved to Mclaren last year it all fell to pieces due to a lack of support. In a way, it reminds me of Heinz Harald Frentzen back in 1997. Back then, he was regarded as a better driver than Schumi, but got virtually no support at Williams and had 2 bad years there. Then he leaves to join the less competitive Jordan and nearly wins the title!

To say lewis was better then alonso in 2007 is wrong. They ended up with the same amount of points in brazil. And don't forget it was alonso vs Mclaren and lewis. ( well maybe not right. But i think there was something going on between alonso and mclaren, otherwise nobody was talking about it.). Another point is that Lewis drove with alonso's setup.

Fact: with Alonso Mclaren had a championchip winning car again

The only way you can really tell is equal cars then the results will speak for themselves after a few years.
But that does not happen in F1.

There isn't a difference in driver talent. Reliability plays a big role, though smaller than in past years.
