The Schumacher-Hakkinen years were the best since Senna-Prost, and I think 99% of us failed to see the value of what we were seeing.

F1 » Herbert: '08 F1 duel best since Senna/Prost

The duel for glory between eventual F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari rival Felipe Massa in 2008 was the best since the legendary battles between Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna some 20 years ago, argues former grand prix star Johnny Herbert.

Really? The best since the Senna/Prost years? Really? I''m not sure I agree with that statement.

What about that soap opera of a fight in 2007 between Alonso and Hamilton? Or, what about the Schumacher/Hakkinen duels? Or even Schumacher/Hill? Yes, 2008''s duel between Hamilton and Massa was fairly exciting at best but really, it was full of dumb mistakes by both. It was actually pretty frustrating to watch if you ask me, not to also mention the lopsided decisions of the stewards throughout the season.

Holy **** how i MISS those times...

How as GREAT to wake up, get in front of my TV and watch the Prost/Senna battle. That was a race of MEN, not a race of BRATS.

Senna was a driver apart. Despite your personal oppinion on his driving skills, how beloved he was. How charismatic. I miss him a lot, dude.

There was some respect among the drivers in the past. Even being enemies at the track, people could be friends and show some respect for each other.

A pitty.

I think Herbert's statement is a little bit over the top. For me the Schumacher / Hill duels were far more exciting, not to mention the hakkinen years

senna and prost were not friends, on or off the track, so there was bitter rivalry. as far as i know, lulu and flip ARE friends, so the rivalry is perhaps different.

the schumacher alonso battle of 06 was the best as both were fantastic and made very few errors. in the first 7 races alonso only dropped a couple of points. both michael and alonso were at the top of their game and no one called match them.

closley followed by mika nd michael. esp the suzuka race in 00, they both finished a minute ahead of their team mates-they were in a different time zone to them.

Looking back at former drivers is a lot like describing one's own driving exploits. The older I get, the faster I was.

i would have to disagree. they were in close contention but they didn''t seem to battle eachother very much. i think alonso and hamilton in 07 was a more similar rivalry to senna and prost.

it seemed like whenever hamilton won, massa was far behind him, and whenever massa won, hamilton was far behind him as well.

My Opinion Only

No comparison at all.
Prost/Senna didn't have traction control or any of that technology. They drove like REAL drivers should and used their talent and behaved like professional drivers.
Nowadays F1 is like slot car racing with very little overtaking and very little driver ability.
How the 2 battles can be compared beats me.
