Collins was in 3rd place when he gave his car to Fangio and a long way behind Moss, Fangio ended up just 5 seconds behind in second place due to Moss actually running out of petrol with 5 laps to go and being pushed back to the pitts by his team mate.

So yes, If Collins had won the race he would have won the championship, but when he was sat 3rd a long way behind Moss and Musso with 15 laps to go that looked highly unlikely.
