The University of Texas has called for a change of date for the 2013 US Grand Prix as it conflicts with one of its biggest college football games.

Adding on to the things some have said...
F1 should try and market itself as a different form of racing to US audiences. I mean, Some Americans still thinks Nascar or Indycar is equivalent or superior to an F1 car base on their top speeds !
I was watching the FOTA forum in Austin and Sam Michael when talking about F1 technology, describe an F1 car in every circuit as a new prototype. That is a powerful statement and should be the way F1 markets itself to US audiences.
