The onset of torrential rain has forced the stewards to throw a red flag and interrupt the Malaysian Grand Prix.

What started in dry, if overcast, conditions, quickly descended in chaos, as rain started falling around lap 18. While teams dithered over the choice of full Bridgestone wets or intermdiates, conditions got steadily worse, eventually flooding the track such a degree that there was little option but to halt proceedings.

The remaining cars are currently sitting on the grid, sheltering as best they can from the rain and lightning, awaiting a decision on whether there will be a restart.

The event, however, started at 5pm local time and and could run out of viable light.
