Sebastian Vettel emerged strongest in the 'Battle of the Bulls' to claim pole position for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone under pressure from Rubens Barrichello and Red Bull Racing team-mate Mark Webber.

The Australian had looked the early favourite for top spot - and his first F1 pole - but failed to produce the time he needed as everyone bolted on fresh option tyres and went for it in the final two minutes. When he was then distracted by Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari on his last attempt, the dye was cast.

Vettel, to his credit, had improved on Webber's early target by half a second, and that proved enough to put him back ahead of Barrichello, who snatched pole briefly before the German followed him across the line to retake P1. Webber's efforts then came up short, giving his team-mate a second straight pole - and an immediate chance to make up for the faux pas when in front in Turkey.

Jarno Trulli underlined his position as a podium threat in fourth, with Kazuki Nakajima claiming a career-best fifth, leaving points leader Jenson Buttons struggling in sixth spot and complaining about low grip from his Brawn.
