Montezemolo: 2009 not a write off yet

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has said that he is convinced the Scuderia will get some 'satisfaction' before the end of the current F1 season.

To date Ferrari has struggled to match the likes of Brawn Grand Prix and Red Bull Racing and one look at the Constructors' Championship is ample evidence of that, with the Maranello-based men way down in fourth with only 26 points, compared to the 105 notched up by the leaders, Ross Brawn's ex-Honda outfit.

Despite a pretty miserable year though, and one in which they failed to score points until the fourth race in Bahrain, Montezemolo does see light at the end of the tunnel and he added that he has faith in current team principal, Stefano Domenicali and the teams two drivers, Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa.

"I have to admit that it hasn't been a great year for the team so far," he told the tifosi in a forum on the Scuderia's official website, www.ferrari.com. "There are several reasons for that. Unfortunately, we started the season with grey rules. It is difficult to give a correct interpretation, and the proof is that the three teams that have won the last F1 world championships - Ferrari, McLaren and Renault - have made the same interpretation of the rules and they are not as competitive as before.

"I'm convinced, though, that with the work by Stefano Domenicali and the whole team and the drivers, we will get some satisfaction - and this year. I am confident that we can improve our performance in the next races, but having said that it is quite difficult - if not impossible, really - to dramatically change the car during the season without tests."

As for the future of F1, Montezemolo added that KERS is definitely on the way out and won't be used in 2010.

He also noted that FOTA has a number of plans to try and improve the whole show, including before the grand prix itself so that the fans get better value for money on the Friday and Saturday.

"For next year all the teams have decided not to use KERS in F1," he continued. "We made the car (the F60) with KERS; it means that more weight is on the car and a lot of other teams have not [used] KERS, so if the federation (FIA) wants to introduce KERS, it has to be the same for everybody.

"Inside FOTA the teams are [also] checking several options to make the days before the races more interesting. There are several proposals right now on the table. We will check them and discuss them at the F1 commission. Now I think it is time to go back to stable, clear and transparent rules."

Ghost: "Every series will, sooner or later, have to make some sort of green gesture." Why? Making an F1 car more fuel efficient will make zero difference to the planet. Green gestures on the cars are political, not scientific. It would make more difference to the planet if they made Bernie travel by road instead of arriving at circuits by private helicopter. It would make more difference if they held more races in Europe so they don't have so many long haul flights shipping the circus around to empty stadiums in Turkey etc. On the other hand, an empty stadium in Turkey means no CO2 footprint from 20,000 cars bringing spectators.

Ghost: "I liked the KERS concept" I liked it too, but not the imposition of it. I thought Mclaren devised a kers system years ago but were not allowed to use it. If kers was going to have green credibility then they should have been allowed to make max use of it, not limit it to seven secs per lap, and put a fuel limit on the cars per race, so that the more kinetic energy an engine recovers, the more advantage it has to offset the weight and balance issues of the kers units.
