Webber takes German pole.

Mark Webber finally claimed pole position for a grand prix, fending off the attentions of Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel and the Brawns of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello in final qualifying at the Nurburgring.

Leaving it late, the Australian set his time after the chequered flag had fallen as the German circuit dried after intermittent rain throughout the hour-long qualifying process, but still had to wait for confirmation of his position as his main rivals all ran behind him on track. Vettel initially dropped into second, but was then usurped by, first, Button and, then, Barrichello, leaving the Silverstone winner fourth fastest.

Lewis Hamilton had been a threat going into the closing stages, having joined Button in leaving his run to the last minute, but had to settle for fifth in the final reckoning after being able to maintain the sort of pace to run right at the front on his final lap. Intriguingly, the world champion will line up alongside McLaren team-mate Heikki Kovalainen, whose MP4-24 doesn't yet feature the developments fitted to Hamilton's machine this weekend.

Force India's first appearance in the top ten shootout resulted in an eventual seventh for Adrian Sutil, who will line up ahead of the Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen, with Renault's Nelson Piquet Jr rounding out the fifth row.
