Despite being seen by some as a potential candidate to replace Sebastien Bourdais at Scuderia Toro Rosso following the Frenchman's sacking last week, Bruno Senna insists that it is too late to break into Formula One this season.

The Brazilian was among the names mentioned in connection with Bourdais' seat before the season even started, before the four-time Champ Car title-winner was handed a late reprieve, but ended up campaigning in the Le Mans Series after his decision to hold out for an F1 place - he was also in the running for the second Honda ride - led to him missing out on leading GP2 Series opportunities.

Bourdais' exit from Faenza opened up the possibility of Senna finally making the jump to the top flight, before Toro Rosso eventually plumped for Red Bull prot?g? Jaime Alguersuari, the 19-year old Spaniard becoming the youngest grand prix participant when he makes his debut alongside fellow rookie Sebastien Buemi at this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. Senna, however, insists that he isn't too bothered about being overlooked for a second time.

"I think it's a bit too late now for moving to F1 in 2009," he told GP Week, "It would so more harm than good to jump in with no testing. It's better to wait and do things properly for next year."

With three new teams poised to join the fray in 2010, there should be plenty of opportunities for the Brazilian, who has already been listed as a potential target for Campos Grand Prix should he not be snapped up elsewhere. He admits that he has been in talks, albeit without revealing his possible targets.

"We're speaking to quite a few of the teams, with relationships we made last year," he confirmed, "We have some really good contacts [and], also within the new teams, we have some good contacts.

"It's just ticking along right now. We're waiting for the political side of F1 to resolve itself a little bit because it's pretty messy, but it's just a question of being in the right place at the right time. We're trying to give ourselves the best chance we can get and trying to focus on the right opportunities this time.

"I'm taking this year as a good year to imp[rove my fitness training. At the end of last year, I was already fit enough for F1, but there's no harm done in being extra fit!"
