Gallagher joins Cosworth for F1 return.

Cosworth has revealed that former Jordan and Jaguar F1 marketing head Mark Gallagher will head up its F1 business unit as the engine company prepares to return to the top flight after a couple of years on the sidelines.

Gallagher, whose Status Grand Prix outfit guided Team Ireland to the A1GP title in 2008-09, has been appointed to represent Cosworth at races and will take full responsibility for co-ordination of relationships with its customers, which are expected to include all three F1 newcomers to the grid in 2010 - Team US F1, Manor Grand Prix and Campos Meta. An identical package comprising high-performance engines and technical support will be provided to each team, and any other opting to take up the option of running its V8.

"I am very pleased that Mark has agreed to join Cosworth,"chief executive Tim Routsis commented, "Mark is the ideal man to head up Cosworth's F1 operation and I'm confident he will play a major role in Cosworth's success as our engines return to the grid in 2010."

Gallagher brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having spent 26 years in various top-line motorsport arenas, including F1, the World Rally Championship and A1GP. He worked with both Jordan Grand Prix and Jaguar Racing between 1995 and 2005.

"The opportunity to lead Cosworth's F1 operations is one that I am relishing," the Irishman admitted, "As we start an exciting new chapter in the history of Cosworth's contribution to F1, my focus will be on ensuring that the technical excellence inherent in our products and the trackside support we will provide will play a significant role in enabling our customers to achieve their goals."

Cosworth has been absent from the top flight since the end of the 2006 season, when it found no takers for its V8 following Williams tie-up with Toyota and its rev-limited V10 was ruled ineligible following Scuderia Toro Rosso's controversial campaign under a more relaxed set of regulations.

Second only to Ferrari in terms of grand prix victories at that point, the company had to content itself with consultancy work and manufacturing for various automotive and aerospace clients - including many in motorsport - before being handed a potential road back to F1 when FIA president Max Mosley revealed that it had won the tender to provide a spec engine to any team interested in taking up the option.

The updated FIA F1 tech regs for 2010 as posted mid august have no exception for any engine to run above 18000 rpm, it also removed all refernece to greater freedom of motion in the front wing plane and all ref to a movable rear wing... in other words, there is one set of rules and all the cars will be run to the same regs.
