Force India: Liuzzi proved he is a real star

Force India F1 team boss, Dr Vijay Mallya has hailed the performance of Vitantonio Liuzzi, who made his race debut for the Silverstone-based outfit in Sunday's Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Liuzzi, who was promoted from test and reserve driver after Giancarlo Fisichella defected to Ferrari, enjoyed a great weekend, especially when you consider that his last F1 race was the 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix with Toro Rosso.

Despite that though, the Italian shone, making it into the top-ten shoot-out in qualifying on Saturday and then running in sixth on Sunday in the grand prix until driveshaft problems cut short his race on lap 22.

"Tonio almost had a perfect start to his Force India race career, but unfortunately we couldn't give him the reliability he deserved," Mallya noted. "Nevetheless he has marked himself out as a real star and I am sure that he will get his points further down the line. He has been a revelation on his debut."

Liuzzi meanwhile was just delighted to be back racing and the former F3000 champion is already looking ahead to Singapore and the remaining events, eager to try and get his Mercedes-powered VJM-02 in the points.

"Finally, I am racing again and I gave it 100 per cent," Liuzzi said following the 13th round in the 2009 FIA F1 World Championship. "We didn't make any mistakes and everything was perfect until we were in a great position, but that's racing unfortunately.

"I had an unusual problem, the transmission started making a strange noise and then I lost drive and couldn't push. That's racing it was just a shame as we didn't have a reliability problem until now, but that's how it is.

"We won't give up though until the end of the season, we want to get lots of points and I am sure we will make it."

Liuzzi was, for me, the driver of the day. Force India now have, a great pair of drivers now. Both are young enough, to take the team far. I hope Force India, all the best.

He never really fitted in at Torro Rosso, mainly because you have to be called Sebastian to work there. Seriously though, excellent drive by both FIs, Sutil is learning and I have no doubt he will soon be on the top step, Luizzi drove brilliantly in quali and in the race. Fisi got what he wanted and achieved his dream by driving the red car at Monza, he did a good job for his first race in an awkward car.
