Soucek earns Williams test after F2 win

Andy Soucek will test a Williams F1 car at the end of the 2009 season after being crowned the winner of the inaugural FIA Formula 2 Championship at Imola.

The Spaniard wrapped up the title one round early after putting enough distance between himself and closest challengers Robert Wickens and Mikhail Aleshin with a third place finish in Italy.

His subsequent prize is the chance to sample a Williams F1 car, the company having designed the F2 chassis that Soucek has been driving in 2009.

A former World Series by Renault front runner and GP2 podium winner, Soucek was delighted with his title win, while he hopes his test with Williams will provide a platform for him to reach Formula 1 soon.

“I still can't believe it," he said. "The test with Williams is a real chance for me to get into Formula One. It's going to be my second F1 drive, but it will be a new experience for me: it will be with slicks, and it will be with Williams who have had a good year.

“Hopefully I will have a very good test - I'm going to prepare myself physically as good as I can and if it goes well we will see what happens next year."

Williams team principal Frank Williams extended his congratulations to Soucek personally as himself and Patrick Head were present to watch him secure the title.

"I am able to personally offer him (Andy) my very sincere congratulations on effectively dominating a very close category of motor racing. I remember saying a year ago that Formula Two would join GP2 as the desired or accepted stream of new up and coming drivers for Formula One, and I will as a result of this season continue to believe the same.

"I think the cost of this championship makes all other relevant championships around it look extraordinarily expensive. I think it's wonderful value for money, and as a consequence we've also agreed with Jonathan Palmer to provide the championship winner the opportunity of a test drive in a Williams Formula One car at the end of this season. This of course will be given to Andy Soucek, of Spain, and I hope - and he probably will - acquit himself very well in our machinery, and hopefully this will launch him into a Formula One career.

"As a team principal I repeat that the value of this category of racing is of great value to team principals in trying to assess the real talent of people who deserve to be launched into Formula One."

@ PhilW you are so right about his sideburns! That photo looks like it was taken in the 60s! :) Seriously though, it is nice to have some F1 good news for a change. Soucek was excellent this year and deserves a crack at the big time. Let's hope Williams see the potential in him and let him replace Hulkenburg as third driver next year. Or maybe Campos will take a look now?
