Ecclestone: Canada return not definite

F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has revealed that the return of the Canadian Grand Prix in 2010 is by no means certain.

Organisers of the Montreal event announced that it would be back next season earlier this month, when it was revealed that the commercial dispute between the Grand Prix F1 du Canada Inc. and Formula One Administration had been settled [see separate story - click here]. However, it now appears that confirmation was somewhat premature.

Indeed when the 2010 F1 calendar was revealed this week it was noted that the inclusion of the Canadian GP was still subject to the completion of negotiations with FOM.

Furthermore Ecclestone met with former senator Michael Fortier this week to try and bring matters to a close, and while he is optimistic, he did emphasise that there are some loose ends that still need to be tied up.

"We want to be back there, and I think our friends in Montreal want us to be back," Ecclestone told CBC News. "The public in Montreal are very good - we've got a lot of fans there. All the teams enjoy being there.

"For me [though] there's not a deal till everything is signed properly. The issues that we had were minor - but I think we've managed get around them."

Fortier meanwhile confirmed that talks went well, but that 'negotiations' are still to be continued.

If talks do fail, like they did last year, the Turkish Grand Prix will be moved from May 30 to June 6 to fill the void between the Monaco GP on May 23 and the European GP at Valencia on June 27. Canada is provisionally pencilled in for June 13.
