Heidfeld confident on no more engine woes

Nick Heidfeld says he is in 'pretty good shape' for the remainder of the F1 season, despite being forced to use his ninth engine of the campaign in Singapore.

With the BMW Sauber man having been forced to the back of the grid for an underweight car in Singapore, BMW elected to go over the eight engine limit for the German – which would normally have incurred a ten place grid penalty.

Heidfeld's accident in Singapore means the new engine only completed limited mileage and he will now look to use the same motor in Japan and Brazil before switching to an older unit for the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

“I am on my ninth engine, now which hasn't done a lot of kilometres in Singapore,” he said. “Most likely I will use it here and in Brazil and then I will be allowed to use one of the older engines for Abu Dhabi, not before that, but that will not have a lot of mileage on as well. I changed engines at the last race and got a penalty but from now on I think I am in pretty good shape.”

BMW introduced its latest update last time out in Singapore, although Heidfeld's penalty meant he was unable to make the most of the changes to the car.

On a more 'traditional' circuit, the German said he was hopeful of reaping the benefits of the aerodynamic changes but said the team would only find out once on-track action kicks off on Friday.

“We don't have another update here but we had a big package for Singapore,” he said. “But our feeling is that our car is not the best mechanically and probably it was possible also to see that on the television pictures. We were jumping around quite a bit even though the track was newly resurfaced. Here it should be more of a normal track and we hope our aero package will suit it pretty well, but we will find out.”
