Wickens hopes for F1 move

Formula Two runner-up Robert Wickens targets a move to F1 for 2010, although a lack of sponsorship could stop him achieving his dream
Formula Two runner-up Robert Wickens has revealed that has spoken 'off the record' with a number of teams about making the move into F1 for the 2010 season.

Wickens, who won the Formula BMW USA title in 2006 and has also won races in both the Champ Car Atlantic Series and A1GP, is currently a member of the Red Bull Young Driver scheme but could lose his backing at the end of the year.

That would make it more difficult for the Canadian to make the break-through into F1 having been overlooked by Red Bull for the upcoming F1 tests at Jerez. British F3 title winner Daniel Ricciardo, F2 racer Mirko Bortolotti and Brendon Hartley have all be called up by Red Bull for the test – the latter two running with Toro Rosso.

Wickens' will head in to 2010 as the only driver from North America to hold a valid FIA superlicence which could make him a possible option for USF1 if it wishes to run a North American driver, although he admitted that a lack of sponsorship was likely to work against him.

"I haven't been approached officially, but I have spoken off the record with a few F1 teams," he told Canada's Globe and Mail. "I will be the only North American in 2010 to hold a valid FIA super-licence, which could pay dividends. But we will have to wait and see.

"Basically, if you can't bring any money to the table, you can't get in with one of the new teams and, with the current economy, you aren't going to get a reserve role with any of the other teams. I have always said my whole life since I was 10 years old that I just want a career in motorsports. I mean the goal is still F1 and my dream is F1, but in the end, I would rather pay my bills racing than being in an office from nine to five."

Wonder why Red Bull Junior Team might drop him from their ranks? He's a talented driver. If USF1 ever get off the ground, he'd be a good choice for them. And he can't be as bad as Allen Berg was! Why is it always cack drivers who can get big bucks sponsorship?

Well here go again. If he has the talent very well. If he was hoping for a seat with Red Bull or it's b-team, bring Gold mucho gold. I wouldn't be surprised if he has more talent than the seat-warmers on the grid now. F1 is not structured to give any new driver a fair chance of showing what he can do.. I belive that all teams should be able to field a competive car, and have the requred finances to compete without relying on mega bucks from some rookie. Say what will, the driver takes all the risks. In reallity the owner takes none. Loss of money can be replaced, the driver has more to loose than that. All the best Wickens! Adios JOSE
