Spa-Francorchamps re-issued with racing licence

The hugely popular Spa-Francorchamps circuit in the Ardennes has had its racing licence re-instated, thereby theoretically securing the future of the Belgian Grand Prix for at least 2010...
The legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit has had its racing licence re-instated – in a development that should theoretically remove all doubts regarding the immediate future of the Belgian Grand Prix.

To the shock of most within the paddock – given the almost universal love for Spa amongst drivers, teams and fans alike – it was announced back in September that the famous Ardennes track had seen its licence rescinded by the local Council of State until 2026 due, it was claimed, to 'seriously inadequate and incomplete' measures having been taken to address noise levels following complaints from residents.

Crash.net subsequently published an e-mail sent to us by an association of local residents called Defendons Francorchamps, protesting that 'we are not disturbed by the permanent work of the circuit', 'we really feel more and more attacked by the bad publicity and false or directed figures that certain badly-disposed people are spreading everywhere' and 'we are for the continuity of the circuit – and we will fight to preserve it' [see separate story – click here].

Now, according to rtbf.be, their prayers have been answered, after a new licence – understood to run until March, 2011 – was officially signed earlier this week by Philippe Henry, the planning minister of the Wallonia government.
