Carroll 'hopeful' of getting F1 2010 break

'Hopeful' reigning A1GP World Cup of Motorsport Champion Adam Carroll has revealed that he is 'in the middle of negotiations' with one of the four F1 2010 newcomers as he bids to finally graduate to the grand prix grid next season
Adam Carroll has revealed that he is 'in the middle of negotiations' with one of the four F1 2010 newcomers as he bids to finally make his debut at the pinnacle of international motor racing – even if Manor Grand Prix, which had previously appeared to be his best bet, seems to be looking elsewhere.

Carroll has impressed in every category in which he has competed, triumphing five times in the feeder GP2 Series and claiming title glory for Ireland in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport in 2008/09 – and getting the better of new Mercedes Grand Prix-signing Nico Rosberg when the pair teamed up together for an end-of-season F3 event in South Korea back in 2003.

Finances, however – or rather a distinct lack thereof – have always conspired against the Ulsterman, and whilst he has been on the fringes of F1 for some time and served as a member of Honda's young driver programme three years ago, opportunity has yet to truly knock on his door.

At 27, though, Carroll is clearly still young enough to make the grade at the highest level, and he has been linked in recent weeks with Manor – which is expected to be rebranded Virgin Racing any day now, after the FIA somewhat let the cat out of the bag with its official F1 2010 entry list [see separate story – click here] – alongside Toyota refugee Timo Glock.

“We're in the middle of negotiations with one of the new teams coming into F1,” the Portadown ace told the Belfast Telegraph, “and I'm hopeful of winning a drive and making the final step to the top of the sport.”

However, Manor boss John Booth has hinted that current Renault reserve driver and multiple GP2 Series race-winner and title contender Lucas di Grassi is more likely to be given the nod, having enigmatically hinted earlier this week: “Hopefully, we should be able to announce the second driver in a couple of weeks. There is a possibility he may have won the Macau [F3] Grand Prix before.”

That would suggest that Carroll is more likely to wind up at either Campos Meta 1 alongside Bruno Senna, Lotus F1 or North Carolina operation USF1.

Richard Adam Carroll is from Northern Ireland, so like Eddie Irvine would be considered a Brit - and like Irvine would have the UK flag and anthem if he won a race. Hopefully wherever he is from he wouldn't get slated like Hamilton and Button do.
