Rubens Barrichello was in contention to take the 2009 F1 drivers' title this year - and all in what was his 17th season at the pinnacle of the sport.

The veteran looked set to play second best to his Brawn Grand Prix team-mate, Jenson Button early on. Indeed while the Englishman won six races in the first seven events, Rubens' best results were three runners-up spots.

It wasn't until the British Grand Prix at Silverstone that the momentum shifted and with Button struggling, Barrichello found himself right back in the thick of the fight to take the title, notable highlights victories at the European and Italian Grand's Prix.

In the end though it wasn't enough and Rubens finished the year third in the drivers' championship with 77 points - 18 less than Button and 7 less than eventual runner-up, Sebastian Vettel.

Nevertheless his form did enough to impress you and he was voted fifth in your poll for the top driver of the 2009 season. It was also enough to ensure he will remain at the top level in 2010, having agreed a deal to join Williams alongside Nico Hulkenberg.
