GP2 test for Schumi as F1 return gathers momentum

Possible Mercedes GP 2010 F1 driver Michael Schumacher set to evaluate his fitness by conducting a week-long test in a GP2 Series car.
Michael Schumacher looks set to test a GP2 car soon, as the record-breaking multiple F1 world champion steps up his bid to return to the sport with Mercedes GP and compete in F1 2010.

According to reports by British newspaper, The Mirror a 'top secret' outing is being planned in the Middle East, something that will fuel hopes the 40-year-old will come out of retirement.

While the specific site for the test has not been disclosed, it is thought it could be held in Abu Dhabi - scene of the 2009 F1 finale, or in Bahrain, which will of course kick off the 2010 FIA F1 World Championship.

It is believed it will last for at least a week, as Schumacher and Mercedes-Benz are keen to see if the neck injury he sustained in a Superbike crash at the start of the year is no longer an issue.

Lingering neck problems were blamed for why Schumacher had to abandon his come-back with the Scuderia back in the summer, when he was lined up to stand in for the injured Felipe Massa.

Indeed fitness might be the only stumbling block now, as Schumacher himself recently told Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo that there was 'a very, very, very strong possibility that he will drive for Mercedes' in 2010 [see separate story – click here].

More to follow as and when we get it...

racing is in his blood. only he knows if he is fit enough or ready enough to race. He is not stupid. He still has the hunger to race and win. Besides, ferrari has kinda disappointed him by hiring kimi behind his back, then hiring alonso behind kimi's back. Ferrari as a team is not loyal to any of its drivers at all, so why should Schumi care about ferrari? Im pretty sure schumi has got to prove something, and this makes it more important. I think he got sick and tired of developing road cars, probably he felt like he is treated as a run-of-the mill driver. It will be interesting, im sure.
