Alonso: Button McLaren move not a mistake

Fernando Alonso says - perhaps surprisingly, given his history with McLaren – that Jenson Button hasn't made an error in agreeing to join the team for F1 2010.
Fernando Alonso has defended Jenson Button's decision to move to McLaren-Mercedes in 2010.

Button inked a deal to team up with Lewis Hamilton back in November and many of F1's most high-profile figures have since suggested that he could regret it, with Jackie Stewart, for example, telling Crash.net recently that the 2009 F1 world champion should perhaps have been more mindful of the bigger picture when making his decision about where to drive in F1 2010 [see separate story – click here].

Alonso of course went to McLaren in 2007 and his one-year spell there was far from happy, with the Spaniard re-joining Renault for 2008-09, before then moving to Ferrari for the coming season. However, while his own experiences there and alongside Hamilton were turbulent, he doesn't think Button will struggle half as much as is being predicted.

"Jenson decided he wanted a new challenge," Alonso told SpeedTV.com. "He was not absolutely happy with the new contract for Brawn and he is going to a very competitive team. Definitely he is happy, and for sure it is not a mistake."

Jarno Trulli meanwhile concurs that Button will be able to match Hamilton and won't be crushed by his fellow countryman.

"I can't see Jenson being blown away by Lewis," Trulli told BBC Sport. "Jenson deserves to be world champion and it'll be a nice battle at McLaren. Jenson is a great guy and he will get on well with Lewis.

"I've been reading stuff left and right saying he will be blown away by Lewis but at the end of the day only the track will tell."

I don't think FA is defending McLaren, its just a case of supporting a fellow racer and maybe one he doesn't have issues with, but all in all nice comments from him

FA is dead right. Brawn offered JB a rubbish deal that they knew he'd reject cause we now know they were speaking to MS on the sly. Mcl is a good team, should build a good car. I dont think LH will hammer him as suggested. I think it will be close plus the new regs should suit JB over LH
