Tung: Renault test role an amazing opportunity

Ho-Pin Tung will act as Renault's official third driver in F1 2010 - and will sub for either Robert Kubica or Vitaly Petrov should circumstances dictate it.
Ho-Pin Tung has vowed to make a 'real contribution' after he was confirmed as the third driver for the Renault F1 team on Sunday following the launch of the outfit's 2010 F1 challenger in Valencia.

Tung tested for Renault at the end of last year and he is now looking forward to continuing to work with the Enstone-based outfit, as well as racing in the GP2 Series with DAMS, what will effectively be Renault's Junior Team.

"Since the day I started racing, F1 has always been my objective. So to reach the pinnacle of motorsport and become part of such a famous team as Renault is an amazing opportunity. It's really a dream come true for me, but it's also the start of a new adventure. In many ways everything starts from now," said Tung.

"I want to make the most of being part of the Renault F1 Team to learn as much as I can; to absorb everything around me and to become a better driver. But I also want to make a real contribution and whenever the team needs me, I will be ready to help.

"During my first test session with the team in Jerez last December, the engineers were impressed with my speed and the accuracy of my technical feedback. To gain their respect was always my main objective and I'm pleased I managed to do that."

Tung is now in a great position to become China's very first F1 driver and he is hopeful he will get lots of support.

"My new position with Renault is excellent news for Chinese sport. China is new to motorsport, especially F1, even though there has been a Grand Prix in Shanghai since 2004. I hope that I can build on this base and count on the support of the many fans in China," he continued.

Jerome d'Ambrosio and Jan Charouz meanwhile will also act as reserve drivers' for the Renault F1 team, the former joining Tung in the GP2 Series, F1's feeder category, with DAMS. Both DAMS cars will compete in GP2 bearing Renault's colours.

"After two seasons in GP2 I feel I'm ready to fight for the title in 2010: that's my aim," said d'Ambrosio. "I know the team and its working methods like the back of my hand and I also know the circuits we'll be racing on this year. In addition, driving a black and yellow car will be something very special and I'm really determined to defend these colours in the way they deserve."

"I'm very happy to make my return to a formula which places the greatest demands on driver skills," Tung added. "I feel I'm ready to take up this challenge and show that the team has made the right choice by selecting me. I'm delighted to join the prestigious DAMS squad and I hope I'll be able to add more victories to its laurels this season."
