Campos: Today could be D-Day

Adrian Campos has asserted that all is being done to ensure his financially-troubled, eponymously-named Campos Meta 1 outfit makes the starting grid in F1 2010 - despite some of the 'stupid' rumours swirling around about the team
Adrian Campos has blasted some of the untrue and 'stupid' rumours being spread about the financial health of his eponymously-named Campos Meta 1 outfit, adamant that all is being done to get the team to Bahrain – whilst revealing that today (Monday) is the latest self-imposed deadline.

Of the four F1 2010 newcomers, Campos appears to be in the greatest danger of failing to make the field in time for the Bahrain Grand Prix curtain-raiser in mid-March, taking over that mantle from previous laughing stock USF1.

A significant budgetary shortfall is understood to be the major issue, with speculation even suggesting that chassis-builder Dallara has halted production on Campos' cars in response to repeated failures to pay – and is ready to pull the plug in order to sell its designs onto Serbian hopeful Stefan GP, which is endeavouring to secure a grid slot for the forthcoming campaign should any of the accepted entries prove unable to make the grade. Unhelpful speculation, Campos bemoans.

“We are trying to have everything solved on Monday,” the former Minardi F1 ace told BBC Sport. “People are saying a lot of stupid things. Some are true and some are not. We are working very hard to be in Bahrain.

“Sometimes we pay the [instalment of] €7m to Dallara, and sometimes we don't have the money. We are trying to solve the problem. They can't [sell the chassis' onto Stefan GP] – we have a contract with them.”

In partnership with compatriot and business associate José Ramón Carabante, Campos has already signed up former GP2 Series runner-up Bruno Senna – the nephew of legendary triple F1 World Champion Ayrton Senna – as one of its drivers for 2010, and is believed to be in advanced negotiations with a third party interested in either buying the team or else bailing it out in order that it might successfully make the grid in Sakhir.

It has been reported that A1GP World Cup of Motorsport founder Tony Teixeira is the most likely candidate to step in, although given the current financial state and uncertain future of the groundbreaking nation vs. nation series, quite where the South African would get the money from remains unclear.

"taking over that mantle from previous laughing stock USF1" Crash cant help itself, it has to put the boot into USF1 every chance it gets. :? Lets just wait till the season starts before we make judgement.

Crash.net said, 'Adrian Campos....the former Minardi F1 ace'. No, he wasn't an 'ace'. He was a tailender. He had a season & a half in F1 driving for Minardi, & only achieved two finishes. His best result was 14th. Hardly 'ace' material.
