Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has praised the Ferrari team following the successful 1-2 finish in the opening round of the 2010 F1 season in Bahrain.

Fernando Alonso secured a winning start to his time with the Scuderia at the Sakhir circuit, benefitting from mechanical issues for early leader Sebastian Vettel to take his first win since Japan 2008.

The Spaniard was in impressive form in his first outing in Ferrari colours, closing on Vettel following the pit-stops and then pulling away from team-mate Felipe Massa when Vettel was slowed by an exhaust problem.

With Massa following Alonso home in second place on his first race outing since his accident in Hungary last year, Ferrari drew first blood in the title race and di Montezemolo said he was delighted with the result following the difficult season endured last year.

"I am happy but above all really proud of my men who have done an extraordinary job," he said. "This victory has been pursued and wanted after months of hard work. I am extremely happy for them and for our fans.

"Ferrari is always Ferrari. I am delighted for our drivers too. Alonso starts with a victory and Massa still so fast in a tough race after last year's terrible accident.

"A first and second place which encourage us to look forward and keep up the hard work."
