Eponymous team boss Peter Sauber has revealed that he is pursuing the necessary agreement to allow him to change his squad's name back to what it was before German auto giant BMW bought it 2006.

The deal which saw BMW take charge of its own 'works' F1 team saw the Germans honour Sauber's legacy in the sport by including his name in the official team title. However, not that the Munich-based company has withdrawn again, Sauber is looking for permission to drop its name from his two-car entry.

Casual observers will wonder why this wasn't done ahead of the 2010 season, but Sauber opted to play things safe with regard to the television money accrued by the squad based on its 2009 race results - even though the brace of C29s were to be powered by Sauber stalwart Ferrari this year. Despite BMW's exit being announced before the end the 2009 campaign, Sauber was unable to secure a place on the grid immediately, with the Qadbak Investments debacle further delaying the team's inclusion. Only when Toyota later followed BMW in pulling out did a vacancy arise for the Swiss team to fill.

Sauber's desire to revert the team to its original guise was underlined in Bahrain, where Pedro de la Rosa and Kamui Kobayashi both drove cars with the familiar 'S' logo on the engine cover, albeit now with a red background rather than the blue incorporated in the days when the team was heavily sponsored by Petronas. The oil giant's defection to Mercedes has left Sauber without any visible sponsorship this season, although the veteran team boss insists that work is ongoing to find funding both for 2010 and 2011.

"We want to change the name," Sauber confirmed, "Bernie Ecclestone knows that and will decide the next steps."
