Michelin set for comeback?

Michelin says it is prepared to comeback and supply tyres for F1 2011, but only at a price.

Michelin could be on the verge of returning to F1 next season, according to the latest rumours ahead of this Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix, the third round on the F1 2010 schedule.

According to reports by German newspaper, Auto Motor und Sport, Michelin has apparently said it would be interested in coming back, but only if it is suitably compensated. Indeed it is believed that the French tyre manufacturer wants between Euros 2-5 million per team per season, as well as free advertising at all the circuits.

Current tyre supplier Bridgestone announced that this would be its final season last year, the day after the inaugural, season-ending, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Furthermore whilst there has been speculation the firm might continue, especially if the teams pay for their supply, officially at least, there has been no change in its position.

Meanwhile, Alan Henry speculates in his latest column on Autocar.co.uk, that Bridgestone's exit and Michelin's rumoured return might herald the beginning of a new tyre war.

"Michelin - which was driven out as a result of the Indianapolis fiasco in 2005, when it had to withdraw all of its contracted cars on safety grounds - looks as though it might change its mind and return to F1 next season. But only if it can trigger a full blown tyre war in the process," he writes.

Until the rules allow for a relatively even split - between the car, engine, driver & tyres - in influencing the results, F1 will need a single tyre supplier.
