Adrian Sutil lost out in the traditional game of musical chairs as the second phase of qualifying came to a close at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.

With team-mate Tonio Liuzzi also missing the cut, Force India will not be represented in the top ten shoot-out for the first time in five races, although Sutil did his best to escape, moving up to tenth before a stellar last-gasp effort from Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi pushed him back down again. The Japanese driver wound up eight fastest, but Sauber still only had one car progressing to Q3 as team-mate Pedro de la Rosa had been the victim of Sutil's earlier gain.

Nico Hulkenberg had aspirations of making the cut, but a mistake on his final run cost him, and left him on the sidelines along with Renault's Vitaly Petrov and the two Toro Rosso cars of Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari.
