Fernando Alonso admits that the extra traffic in Monaco this weekend should be viewed as an extra challenge for drivers as they seek to secure victory in the biggest event on the F1 calendar.

With the F1 grid expanded to twelve teams this season, and extra four cars will compete around the challenging street circuit, with six of those noticeably off the pace as Lotus, Virgin and Hispania come to grips with the challenge of competing at the highest level.

That led to calls for Q1 to be amended for the weekend in order to reduce the issue of traffic during the session and give more opportunity for people to get a clear lap but Alonso said he was viewing the issue as an added challenge as he looks to give Ferrari its first win in Monaco since Michael Schumacher back in 2001.

"I have heard a lot about the problems with traffic," he said. "It's true this was already a problem when we had twenty cars on track and now there are four more, but we must try and look at this situation as an extra challenge, both for us drivers, who will have to be even more careful when overtaking, but without losing too much time, both in qualifying and the race and for the engineers, who will have to work out just the right moment to send us out on track in qualifying."

Alonso heads to Monaco on the back of a second place finish in his home race at Catalunya last weekend and while his focus is on trying to overhaul Jenson Button for the championship lead, the Spaniard said it was hard to make predictions on how the weekend will pan out.

"The Monaco Grand Prix is a unique event on the calendar," he said. "All of us drivers want to win on this track at some point or other and the teams and sponsors are also particularly keen on doing well at the most famous race in the world, partly because it takes place in a venue that is already very special. It definitely attracts even more media attention than usual, which means the weekend will be even more demanding than usual. Usually on this track there have been surprises on the technical front.

"In the past, we have seen cars run competitively here that have not done so elsewhere and so it is even harder to make any predictions. Maybe we could be the ones to spring the surprise, given that others are already writing us off or are saying they have the edge."
