Heidfeld offers testing services to tyre companies

Nick Heidfeld has said that he would jump at the chance to get some track time by helping next year's F1 tyre supplier get ready for the new season.
Nick Heidfeld has revealed that he would be interested in helping Formula One's new tyre supplier develop their product ahead of debut in 2011 - although his own competitive instincts may count against him.

The German, who opted to take a year out as reserve for the Mercedes GP Petronas team as race drives dried up around him last winter, has admitted that he would be keen to get back behind the wheel and help whichever company lands the deal to replace Bridgestone as F1's tyre supplier. That currently appears to be Pirelli, which appears to have gained an edge over main rival Michelin [see story here], while Cooper/Avon waits in the wings.

"That would be an attractive thing," Heidfeld, starved of testing opportunities under the current cost-restricting ban, admitted to Germany's Sport Bild magazine, "If I am asked, I would not say no."

Whether the erstwhile BMW Sauber driver's rivals would look kindly on him gaining an inside line on the future should he return to the fray next season remains to be seen, however, with Heidfeld making no secret of his desire to be back on the grid before too long.

"I want to be racing again no later than 2011," the 33-year old confirmed, before ruling out joining the likes of Ralf Schumacher and David Coulthard in other series, "But it would have to be in F1 as I feel too young for the DTM or the Le Mans 24 Hours."
