Button fastest in morning practice

F1 2009 world champion Jenson Button heads opening practice in Montreal for McLaren on a 1m 18.127s.
McLaren's Jenson Button led the way in opening practice for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve after a pretty quiet first session.

Button posted the quickest time, a 1 minute 18.127 seconds, around two thirds of the way into FP1, and that left him 0.158 seconds up on Michael Schumacher, who was 'best of the rest' for Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes man Nico Rosberg meanwhile were third and fourth respectively, split by less 0.004 seconds and only slightly slower than their team-mates.

Sebastian Vettel put in a flier late on and finished in fifth in his Red Bull, with Robert Kubica's Renault and Fernando Alonso's Ferrari sixth and seventh, the latter the last of the runners in the 1 minute 18 seconds.

Force India's Vitantonio Liuzzi got off to a good start and was eighth on a 1m 19.097s, followed by the Williams' of Nico Hulkenberg and Rubens Barrichello and then his team-mate, Adrian Sutil.

Further down the order, Felipe Massa was only twelfth in his Ferrari and current championship leader Mark Webber was only 14th, F1 2010 rookie Vitaly Petrov splitting the two veterans in his Renault.

Kamui Kobayashi rounded out the top 15 for Sauber, with Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi 16th and Pedro de la Rosa 17th in the other C29. The Spaniard spun late on at the turn 10 hairpin and Heikki Kovalainen, who was the best of the new team runners in his Lotus, was lucky to avoid the former McLaren tester.

Jaime Alguersuari finished in front of Kovalainen, although encouraging for Lotus only just – with just one tenth between them.

Karun Chandhok split the Lotus' and was 20th - a good boost for Hispania, while Bruno Senna trailed Jarno Trulli in 22nd.

That left the Virgins right at the back, Timo Glock on a 1m 22.713s, 4.5 seconds off the ultimate pace and 0.012 seconds off Senna. Lucas di Grassi did not set a time in the other Virgin car and only completed four laps due to a loose wheel.
