70 per cent of fans would like to see F1 broadcast in high definition - that was one of the main results of a new survey published this week.
The survey conducted by FOTA, the Formula One Teams' Association, in association with LG and F1 Racing
, was completed by more than 90,000 people and focussed on five key areas.
Namely: (1) fans attitudes towards F1 (including media used to follow the sport); (2) questions on F1 issues (rules, venues, TV coverage and so on); (3) questions on FOTA; (4) questions on sponsors (visibility, attractiveness); and (5) a vote on the favourite moment of the 2009 season.
In addition to the demand for HD, 61.6 per cent added that they want more on-board camera footage and a similar amount wanted more pit to car radio transmissions and extra on-screen race graphics and data.
Of those surveyed, 84.2 per cent watch more than 12 races per year, although around 75 per cent haven't actually attended a grand prix in the last twelve months.
Television was the principal means of following the sport, with 90 per cent 'frequently' watching the races live. The internet also came out well, with 72.8 per cent using it to access information, while newspapers accounted for only 34.3 per cent, specialist magazines 24.2 per cent and radio a dismal 5.3 per cent.
Other results showed 68.4 per cent would be either 'quite' or 'very' interested in being able to download F1 races from websites to view, while unsurprisingly 81 per cent said overtaking in races was 'extremely important'.
There was also support for the classic venues – 66.3 per cent strongly agreeing that F1 must continue to go to such circuits – and 72.7 per cent said it should be affordable for those wanting to attend.
Interestingly only 32.4 per cent 'strongly agree' that there should be more races on the calendar.
Finally, Force India's performance in Belgium last year – when Giancarlo Fisichella took pole and almost won – was said to be the best moment of the F1 2009 season, 18.8 per cent voting for it, compared to 14.7 per cent for Jenson Button's title clinching drive in Brazil and 11.6 per cent for Brawn GP's debut 1-2 finish in Australia.
