Alonso: I can still win F1 2010 drivers’ title

Fernando Alonso: I expect our performance to get better and better as this team has a reputation for developing its car quickly and I believe we will be in the fight all the way to the final round in Abu Dhabi. We need to take every opportunity that comes our way.
Fernando Alonso believes he can still win the F1 2010 drivers' title this season, even though the Scuderia has slipped back recently and dropped further behind Red Bull and McLaren.

Alonso, who won the season opener in Bahrain, has struggled lately and last time out in Turkey he went out in Q2 and in the end only finished eighth.

Ahead of this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix though, he is still fourth in the standings, and only 14 points behind Mark Webber, who leads: "I think we are in a good position to fight for this championship," Alonso said. "We need to focus very well and prepare every weekend as though each race is the final one.

"We have had some ups and downs so far and there will be more. The important thing is that we must not get too excited when we do well or too down when we don't. We need to be consistent in what is a very long championship, where we are fighting hard with the other guys at the top of the points table.

"I expect our performance to get better and better as this team has a reputation for developing its car quickly and I believe we will be in the fight all the way to the final round in Abu Dhabi. We need to take every opportunity that comes our way and the whole team is focussed on the goal of being there at the end of the season in November. Overall, we are optimistic. This is a very interesting season."

As for this weekend, Alonso is hopeful he will be able to get a good result, even though the Maranello-based outfit won't introduce its next lot of improvements for the F10 until the next grand prix in Valencia.

"We have arrived in Canada determined to have a good grand prix, taking the maximum number of points possible to stay in the fight for the championship," he added.

"I am very happy to be back racing in Montreal and I hope we can put on a good show for the spectators and most importantly get a good result for the team. We have been working hard over the past couple of weeks to improve the performance of the car. Here in Canada, you need a specific package to deal with this low downforce circuit with its long straights. We are confident the car will be competitive here."

Alonso and Hamilton are the two best drivers there at the moment and neither is leading the championship. Vettel could take it too if he calms down a bit. It's going to be an interesting championship indeed.

A lot of people are saying that Vettel is the "class act". The guy is good at driving, no doubt, but he's too young. He can't take the pressure at the moment, even though those Red Bull bastards (lead by that S.O.B Horner) are promoting him as the "class act". They need to let him mature for another year. Alonso won his WDC at ~24 and Lewis at ~23.5. Vettel is like, what, 22? The guy's still living with his parents, for god's sake. He doesn't have the mindset of a world champion, not yet anyway. I think next year he'll be much better prepared. Young talent is always cool in F1, but Sebastien Vettel is too young at the moment.
